I am afraid your answer it's too hard to change things is the typical response Marty.
I always come back with TRY don't just sit there moaning.
Life is hard and as I said to get stuff changed / improved isn't easy (even though it should be) but it can be done.
I know because I've done it.
Giving in is the very very simple option.

Marty, I know exactly where you're coming from, mate!
I've lived and worked in Germany for the past 20 years, and every time I go back to the UK on a visit, it seems to have changed for the worse.
I feel safe walking though a German city centre on a Saturday night without fear of being set upon by a bunch of yobs. Sure you get crowds of young people milling around. But even when they're the worse for drink, they're just out to have a good time and mind their own business. There simply isn't that all-pervasive menace that seems to be in the air when you walk through just about any UK town or city at night these days, constantly watching your back in case you get jumped, and having to avoid eye contact with strangers in case they want to "have a go" because they think that "you looked at me in a funny way, wanker".
In two decades of living in Germany, I've only ever seen one single, solitary fight in a public place. Yet when I go back to the UK and have a night out "down town", I'm amazed if I come home without having seen it "kick off" at least once, somewhere.
I fear though that the UK is only going to get far worse before it gets better, and although Germany has its problems (the economy is fucked and taxes are rising all the time, which is why I'm contemplating a move across the border and into Luxembourg), I have absolutely no desire whatsoever to return to the UK to live.

To be fair - English is the western language so it's not surprising Europeans feel the need to learn it! Combined with the fact that most of Europe is bordered with at least 2 other countries and we are a stand alone island I'm not overly surprised they learn more languages than us.
