Gary Glitter off the hook
Re: Gary Glitter off the hook
Glitter is undoubtedly a fool, and a seedy old fool at that, but I am very cynical about all this given the Sun's heavy involvement. We do not know for sure what has gone on and probably never will - if "victims" compliance can be bought so cheaply then it must surely figure the other way also. People should take a reality check on this, most of us know at least one associate who "enjoy" holidays in Thailand or similar........
They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?
Re: Gary Glitter off the hook
Unusual to read such an enlightened posting on this subject. There's an interesting interview with The Who in the new Mojo, Pete Townshend reckons this kind of thing is so prevelent amongst that generation due a lot of abuse in the 40's and 50's whilst Roger Daltrey says although child abuse sickens him, people like Glitter are damaged goods who need help and understanding instead of crucifying. I certainly agree that whilst everyone reacts the way they do there will never be a solution to the problem - the media's reaction to his initial PC World sentence drove "Mr Gary" to Cambodia and Vietnam, and the way the entertainment/music industry are writing him out of history is both laughable and disturbing.
I am no liberal schmuck, but it is time people looked closely at those who commit these crimes and find out what made them the way they are.

I worked with a man who held the sincere conviction that anyone who holidayed in Thailand was a paedophile by default. In his words "why else would they go there?". Although he did like to letch at young women in the office.

Re: Gary Glitter off the hook
well said dyanatech,
I have actully been to Vietnam (the perks of a business trip), and on a 24 hr trip to a sleepy island off the coast, where the electricity was turned of at 12am, a french bloke in the bar went for a wander, came back and reported to the group that local kids were offering 'boom boom'!
Just at this point, severe stomach cramps set in. and a steady stream of the shits hit me for the next 12 hrs, thank god for imodium.
the point is......well, there is no point, but it must be widespead throught the region and the weak, possibly like glitter, were more likely led into temptation, not that that is an excuse.
I do know one thing about the country, and that is that it is currupt, like most developing countries, thats the way it is.
maybe there is a point, the ONLY winners in this case are firstly, the newspapers (racking in thousands??), secondly, those passing the money around in Vietnam, and taking a cut.
This victims are either the children or Glitter. And I feel very sad for the true victim, whoever it may be.

Re: Gary Glitter off the hook
I can see that the children are the victims but how on earth can you think that Glitter is a victim too.
He has lived most of his life in a western country and knows full well that it's a massive no no to interfere with, look at dirty pictures of children and/or have sex with them.
Hell we all know that so why should he not know that too.
There maybe many reasons why Vietnam and any develpoing country is corrupt, too many to talk about but I am not having a bar of Glitter being a victim.

Glitter would be a victim if this never happened. The media are following him round, and if their trail goes cold, i would not put it past them to inform his new neibours about the 'monster' living in their area.
things can be blown out of all proportion sometimes. He's now living in a country where evidence does not matter, it's all about $$$$$.
With enough money, the police have a case, there are victims, and the 'monster' is re-created, and most importantly, the media have there 'story' and sell papers.
I stress again, nobody knows the truth, Glitter is a fool,an undesierable character, but knowing the power of the media's $$$$, I do have sympathy with him if he is being set up.
When I was there, the company I used to work for gave 'bungs' in brown paper bags to directors of another company to get the business.
That's the way it goes but that was victimless, unlike the glitter saga.

Re: Gary Glitter off the hook
Yes but why did he go to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam?
I would have thought the answer to that was obvious so if he gets set up, stitched up or whatever then that's his hard luck. He shouldn't have gone looking for kids to have some "fun" with in the 1st place.
