Lennon was no doubt a bully with psychopathic tendencies - the way he seized and adopted various causes makes that much obvious. His upbringing no doubt gave him unpleasant macho traits that surfaced regularly in his first marriage, and it is those and his reactions against all that which drove him into the arms of Yoko Ono where he more or less relinquished control of his life and let her lead him and control what he did. The same personality traits are evident in how he veered from immersing himself in LSD (which did serve to erase his previous personan somewhat) to heroin addiction to primal scream therapy in a less than 2 year periods (68 to 69).
The break-up of The Beatles (George Harrison in particular felt betrayed and abandonned by JL) and the post-split relationship with other band members (particularly McCartney) only serves to prove that the unreasonable side of his personality, no doubt racked by guilt of his "previous self", was never very open to facing up to facts - as does the fact that he rarely ventured to the UK at all throughout the last 10 years of his life. The old hell-raising Lennon of yore did rear it's head back for the "lost weekend" saga of 74, serving to show that he didn't really change at all, he just submitted himself to Yoko, replacing one dominent female in his life (Aunt Mimi) for another.
Of course, his legend is founded on the fact he was a troubled soul (even as a clowning moptop) which is why he is infinitely more interesting than Macca

Given his upbringing influenced a lot of his work, and his very public "Primal Scream Therapy" of the Plastic Ono Band I think it's fair to summise that the damage caused to Lennon which led him to behave the way he did was caused by a unreliable father, a wayward free-spririted mother (and her tragic early death) and his beloved Aunt Mimi. Add to all this being thrust into the world as a "spokesman of a generation" and all the new things the sixties had to offer such a man and there's little wonder he veered from a macho regretful marriage (at the height of Beatlemania) to immersing himself in drugs, and then surrendering to Yoko and subsequently adopting all manner of issues and abandoning his "old life" (Beatles, the UK) completely.

Chill out, Steve. I don't know what Sandie did to shut you up, but her post is obviously meant affectionately.
