Classical Music used as film themes

Post by SID THE CYNIC »

You know the stuff. When a well known piece gets referred to as the so and so music.....

Any other suggestions from the floor?

William Tell Overture ( Rossini) LONE RANGER
O Fortune from Carmina burana ( Carl Orff) THE OMEN
Ride of the Valkyries ( Wagner) APOCALYPSE NOW
Bolero ( Ravel ) 10
Sprach Zarathrustra ( Strauss) 2001

Common myth - it's not in the film, though Jerry Goldsmith's great Omen score was more than possibly inspired by it (I understand Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms is actually much closer. Can't recall it so can't say).

Of course, this doesn't stop programme makers rolling it out whenever they serve up some Omen pastiche or whatever.

It was used to advertise Old Spice mind.

The incidental music in Clockwork Orange was by Walter Carlos who later went to Brazil and came back as Wendy Carlos, if you follow my meaning?

Kubrick does like his classical music:

Shostakovich's "Waltz from Jazz Suite No. 2" in Eyes Wide Shut
Handel's "Sarabande" in Barry Lyndon

Adagio For Strings by Barber appears in any number of movies but I think most movingly in The Killing Fields for me. And Nessum Dorma has made quite a few appearences as well in various movies.
