Hollywood would have us believe that Americans are the bravest people in the world.... time and again, films such as Independence Day and the current War of the Worlds have the (American) heroes battling insurmountable odds against better equiped and vastly superior enemies and emerge triumphant.
The reality, as we know, is that America is best summed up by "Government of cowards, by cowards, for cowards"
During the height of the IRA bombings in Britain, many Americans stayed away for fear of being caught up in a terrorist bombing (although many had helped fund the IRA through NORAID). At the same time travellers for mainland Europe continued to visit our shores in the same numbers as before.
After 9/11 Americans (already well known for hardly venturing outside their own state) travelling abroad decreased dramatically, even though the attack had been on their home soil (reason enough, perhaps, to find peace and quiet elsewhere?).
Today we learn that America has banned its airforce personnel based in the UK from travelling to London for safety reasons.
Isn't it about time we told these people to fuck off, and to take their McDonalds and Starbucks, etc., with them? We don't need them... never have, never will!

Nah.... by the time they turned up, Hitler had already made his biggest mistake of starting the eastern front. That alone would have ensured the defeat of the nazis with or without the USA

Too bleeding true Bob, well put.
Re: America - Hollywood v Reality
Well said Bob, I'm in total agreement with you.

Bruce Willis makes me laugh.
Die Hard all right - as soon as a bomb goes off in Europe, he won't even get on a plane to Cannes to promote his new movie !

Sorry, but I can't see that happening, if not ever, then certainly for a long, long time. If any single country is to replace the USA as a major power, it will be China.... vast resources and a massive and cheap labour force.
