I was actually living in Spain at the time of the Madrid bombings and the General Election you are talking aboput and from gauging the media and more importantly talking to the local Spanish people then the reason why Zapatero got in was because he was anti the war in Iraq and promised to withdraw all Spanish troops and Aznar stayed loyal to the cause.

The public sided with Zapatero.

It was a shock result because only a few days before the election Aznar was widely believed to have an unbeatable lead.

Nowadays, no one can stick their hand up and say "Oops, sorry. Of course quite often this is a load of old ball bag, because sometime 'shit just happens', It's no one's fault.
