You could be right but I'm not qualified to comment as i haven't seen a film on the Big Screen since 1996 - Spyhard(I still have nightmares)

Wouldn't it be a novel idea if they just allowed any films made in 2004 eligible to be voted for, instead of this ridiculous 5/6 nominations per category?

Here are the nominess by the way

No way in hell the likes of Natalie Portman are in the best 5 supporting actresses of 2004 IMHO.

Sadly her best supporting actress scene(with C3PO) was deleted.

Still hoping its an easter egg on one of the Star Wars DVDs....would be about the only time she'd be believable as an actress ;-) let alone worthy of an award

I'd say the oscars are more about studio kudos than big money, Deuce, though it does offer nice kitty to offset their winter/summer releases where the really big money comes into play.

Speaking of which - what about that (admittedly) awesome War of the Worlds* Superbowl trailer? The day after it aired rivals Fox shit themselves and shifted same-date opener Fantastic Four into a different week, a PR disaster that's effectively killed it already. Sorry, comic fans, but that's studio power for you.

*heavily rumoured to be the most expensive film of all, a whopping $300m+.

Maybe but I wouldn't think the fan on the street knows the difference between a Creative or Factory Line studio

Its a well known fact that studios budget for 7/10 films to lose money,2 to break even and 1 to make a bucket load.

If the bucket load is the one that manages to win an Oscar it suddenly becomes a truck load earner...ie Titanic

If any film is worth seeing its because of its STORY not its special effects/Trailer highlights but I hear what your saying loud and clear

Even that doesn't guarantee its place in history, just look at recent Epic disasters...big money....big stars....big nothing...ie TROY

Forgive me for saying 'What The Fuck' but Vin Diesel as Hannibal

At least the other violent action heros(Van Damme,Arnie, etc) had the decency to stay in their genre

When it comes to Oscars I'm reminded of the late great director Lindsey Abderson who was phoned by an actor friend of his who had been nominated as best actor to which Anderson replied, ' You don't take those things seriously, do you?'.

Which in my mind sums it all up really especially when you remember that best film oscars were lost by Taxi driver to Rocky, Forrest Gump to Pulp Fiction, Dances with wolves to Goodfellas. The list just goes on.

So Scorcese will win tonight not because The aviator is a great film but because it's his turn.

And bear in mind also John Ford, Hitchcock and Kubrick never won Oscars in thier lifetime for directing any of their films.

- Insert meaningless drivel here -

Okay, I'm going to take a bit of a battering here for what I'm about to say, but I don't really rate Scorsese's films. Taxi Driver is a classic, certainly, and Raging Bull, Goodfellas and the like are technically well made, with some moments of sheer genius. But they all have central characters that it's almost impossible to feel anything for. Call it a fault, but I tend to like to root for someone, or at least identify with someone. At the centre of each of Scorsese's films is a vaccum.

Raging Bull is a great piece of film-making, but it's also brutal and nasty and I couldn't bring myself to watch it a second time. The fault, as old Billy Shakespeare would say, probably lies within myself, but it's a fact all the same.

Yes, and its abundantly clear from those statistics that they still don't know in advance what the formula for success is.
