If you'd heard very little of them Like me(apart from 1 sentimental ballad
that I keep hearing every now and again) what would you recommend as a good album to start with

Greenday-Recommendations
Re: Greenday-Recommendations
oh heres where droogy comes into his own ....green day were THE band who got me into playing guitar and writing music when i was like 16/17....i know that means nothing to you guys but it could prove important to me when i get a bit older and at worse it got another person playing guitar!
....coincidently it also craddled me through my teenage infatuation with lyrics literally spelling out my emotions....
1990 - 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours
1991 - Kerpunk! (my fav punk album ever)
1993/4 - Dookie
1996 - Insomniac
1998 - Nimrod......
those were their first 5 releases and were my fav music...they then did Warning! (and maybe another one?) which i thought were kinda shite before this current American Idiot..."comeback" album
The new stuff is really good punk but its a 6 or 7 outta 10 rating by green days standards....I know a lotta Clash fans are gonna kill me for this but ive said many many times, green day are/were THE best songwriting punk band ive ever heard. seriously.
1039 is a beautiful but fuzzy debut with great lovesick lyrics but most importantly some really great melodies....not just ordinary melodies but distinctive to the green day that everyone knew. Check out Paper Lanterns and Judges Daughter
Kerplunk is in my top 10 albums of all time and prob my no1 punk album. Its a beautiful, cheaply recorded prototype for Dookie - just listen to my fav GD song ever - Welcome To Paradise....the earliest version on here really shows u how they just perfected it all by album 3.
2000 Light Years Away is THE only song to pine away ur lovelorn nights as a teenager
Dookie.....then the shit hit the fan....10million + sales sending them global with the song everyone knows Basket Case....great song, but ive never felt GD wrote a bad song and i hated the fact everyone treated the rest of their music as filler to the big singles....to be honest u could release ne GD song from these first 5 albums as a single and itd be better than most if not all new/er punk bands.....When I Come Around became the staple diet for teenagers in high school practise rooms. and Welcome To Paradise got souped up....big style not bad for 23 yrs old eh?
Insomniac - SO underated, i gave it a listen again recently and every song is class......Brain Stew of course being the classic guitar riff driven single....Armatage Shanks and Stuart and the Ave are the other leading contenders....but to be honest its all good...This is musically the most similar in terms of guitar sound to the new American Idiot era stuff.
Nimrod - A wonderful blend of different styles of songs all on one record....and showcasing the classic Time Of Your Life (the song ur refering to maybe?) Again, no real weak songs on this album, uve just gotta give it a shot for urself.....the cover arts superb and the power and wall of sound aspect of it is similar to new stuff again...Check out Nice Guys Finish Last
Sorry to write so much but as you cansee GD have a special place in my heart and really kick started my interest in music and got the ball rolling. If you wanna buy an album id start with Dookie so u can get introduced to the supposed "sell out" or "commercial" sound because its a classic. Then either continue with the newer records or give the older rawer stuff a listen
If you're gonna download, id check out the singles, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around, Brain Stew, Time of your Life etc......they are their most impressive songs, but to be honest u could pick a song at random and itll be pretty good
They are also q. unique in the simplicity yet quality of their music, o0nly nirvana really have matched that combination...the riffs are so distinctive
Please let me know how u get on and what u listen to as im interested to see what you think.

If it wasn't for The Clash, there would be no Green Day.......according to the excellent Billy Joe.
I do see the Strummer resemblance when I see Billy Joe play..........not many can carry it off successfully

Re: Greenday-Recommendations
Very Informative Idoldroog unlike the Reviews that are over ladened with such flowery language that would do any creative writer proud
American Idiot
I particularly like them being described as "anti-socialist left leaning"
I bet the fool doesn't even know he's created an oxymoron-oh to be creative
fool
I usually wait for the Greatist Hits to come out but the danger with this is missing gems that were never released as singles
Its a sad reality that once Bands become successful the HITS are all that seem to matter.
Hit Singles = Massive Exposure = Big Sales = BIGGER PROFITS
Creativity generally loses out, just look at the so called Punk Band "The Offspring" same song x number of songs every album
cheers

Re: Greenday-Recommendations
Thats ok Buttsie, you're welcome. I could talk like a reviewer, shit I wanted to be one at one point (films tho) but my passion and enthusiasm towards GD took over and I wanted you to get the best information. My general no.1 point is...the songs i mentioned - the singles, are classics, modern classics really. BUT every other song they ever recorded were excellent also and never ever filler like most.
Yeh I know the clash were THE punk band....but no ones ever used all riffs and sequences to such success as green day...how many times u heard the Brain Stew riff in its variations, but its never worked sowell like that before.
BTW - international superhits looks a bit shit ! just a few singles from each album but it lacks ANY early stuff and seems a bit lame somehow. If you can download something from KERPLUNK! then try it and bare in mind its not really aggressive punk
BTW if you ever did wanna pick up a guitar those tabs are overcomplicated...you basically just need the chord letters its that simple
the bass on the other hand is q. different which really helps with making the songs what they are and dif to other punk.....argh god i love them and im well past my green day phase! lol

No substitute for Quality...I feel the same way about The Cars....the fact that they had followers in punk & mainstream speaks volumes, totally different and never predictable

As someone who has nearly always leaned towards greatist hits albums
the one magical ingrediaent that most miss is cohesion.can't be easy trying to mix & match different periods & styles

Not a snowballs chance in hell. The seed was sown when in Grade 4 I was spotted as being musically inclined,no guitar in the band...musical career over.....far too busy playing games like marbles, twister & KERPLUNK
