Ah, gutted. I'm no football fan but he was a great character, I even read his biography even though I don't have a clue about football and it had me in stitches. The "Bag of sprouts" story concerning a player Cloughie thought might be a poof is worth the purchase price alone. He will be greatly missed by football fans and the general public as a whole too.

I'm a Forest Fan. I remember '79 and '80 when we won the 2 European Cups. I'm not really shocked as I know he was very ill, but will still miss him.

All the Forest Fans on the Fans' Forum are very grateful for the condolences that people are passing on and it's clear that even non footy supporters are quite saddened by this news.

Unfortunately, although Man Utd and L'pool started with their armbands on tonight, many players took them off during the game. Needless to say, this has not gone down well in Nottm.

Shame he was never knighted, but lots of fans refer to him now as "Sir"!

another great Cloughie tale from one of the Forest fanzines:



....I was one of about 100 lads from Cleveland working in the Nottinghamshire area. Someone in Cleveland had dropped a bit of a ballack because 7th May that year was a Bank Holiday Monday so we weren't really needed till the Tuesday (although the extra money was useful...anyhow, I digress.

As the 100 lads, from mainly Middlesbrough, were in Notts on a Bank Holiday with not a lot to do we decided to contact Nottingham Police to arrange for us to go and see Forest play Watford in Division 1.

This was arranged and about 30 of us went to the game. We all got complimentary tickets. We weren't sure why, but we were delighted with the offer.

Forest won 5-1. They were scintillating - one of the best exhibitions of football I've seen. Steve Hodge in particular was outstanding.

10 minutes from the end of the game we were approached by a member of Nottinghamshire Police, who told us not to go anywhere at the final whistle as "Mr. Clough would like a word".

At the end of the game we sat tight, thinking it a wind-up, but sure enough about 20 minutes after the final whistle - same policeman approaced us and said 'follow me'.

30 or so of us followed him straight to the Forest dressing room where Brian Clough ordered one of his players (Kenny Swain) to "go and get these lads a drink", "they are from my home town and they are here as my guests". (Kenny Swain at this point was wearing a pair of shorts and flip-flops - but that didn't stop him doing as he was told).

Swain arrived back with a tray of beer and we sat in the Forest dressing room for 10-15 minutes talking to Cloughie, Woodcock, Birtles, Gary Mills and Steve Hodge before he ushered us to the players lounge for an absolutely magnificent evening.

One of the few plus points of the Miners' dispute and God Bless and Rest in Peace Brian Clough.

I'm not much of a football man myself but this guy was one of the top men in football, He should have been given a crack at being the England manager cause he had the bottle. A great bloke and he was just brilliant with words. RIP sir Brian Clough.

I love football, and had to add my bit. Cloughie, maybe now you are no longer with us on earth, perhaps finally you can help the england team from above.

Well known that when Trevor became the worlds first player to be sold for ?1m back in 1979, Brian kept him and Birmingham City (Trevors club at the time) waiting till he finished a game of squash. After completing the signing, Trevor turned up for training and he had 2 jobs to do....first make the tea for the 'lads' and lastly, mop out the showers used after training. Clough had instructed the other players to piss in them so to make the job more unworthy. Francis got on with it without a word of complaint which endered him to the other players and also brought him down-to-earth after being the first player to be sold for a million.
There is also another 'story' than Clough actually signed Francis for ?999,999 and 'owed' Birmingham the quid as he didn't think Francis was worth a million.....but thats an unfounded rumour
