Grand National
Re: Grand National
You could argue that the Animal Right Campaigners wasted the spectacle of the National around about 8 to 10 years ago when Aintree were forced to modify the fences and the steep drops on the landing side were filled in, all the fences now consist mainly of bracken on the top which is basically just there for show, in my mind it belittles what is meant to be the greatest test for the best jumpers and the best stayers, the politically correct will slowly and surely ruin everything that we take for granted.
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?
Re: Grand National
Is the cross country course at three day eventing any worse?
Horses have to jump ditches, trees in & out of lakes etc yet there are no protests from the animal rights groups.
As crofter said Aintree & the Jockey Club have already bowed to these people in modifiying the course & taken away the pure nature of the event, a test of both horse & rider!
No more messing with National Hunt racing PLEASE!!!!

Re: Grand National
It was interesting to note that one horse (the appropriately named Bounce Back, I think) fell at least three times and still wanted to keep going.

Re: Grand National
I agree wth you wink wink, but I am afraid NH racing is very much in their sights.
Re: Grand National
I know exactly what you mean Cerberus. There are people who seem to think that because they have bought property, it gives them a total veto on everything that goes on in the area. It is irrelavant how long it has been going on for, it it does not suit them they will try and stop it. I take your point about outsiders coming to rural areas and trying to change things but it is not only that. What about the loonies, sorry itellectuals, who buy properties near to major airports and then try to get the number of flights reduced? Our planning laws don't help, anybody can put in an objection, whether it is bona fide or not.
Re: Grand National
Well, this really has brought the liberals out of the woodwork!!!!

I quite agree. i live near and work at a major Uk airport and there have been protests recently about a possible second runway being built, and the airport expanded. The protests have mainly been by people living in a posh village near the airport, admittedly a lot of the village would be destroyed, but the airport was here long before the majority of people bought their houses there.
