Re: Stress is all in the Mind
No position is ever totally hopeless no matter what those on the green side say otherwise we'd all stop tomorrow and just give up
Plenty of literature out there which suggests solutions
Excellent book on global warming covering the last 200 years since it started
I hear so many people talk about the destruction of the enviroment but bugger all of them actually do anything to help it apart from recycling
We've community groups dotted all over Australia that specifically plant tree seedlings on mass to try and make up for the deforestation.
The rest of the time is spent
eradicating introduced problem species like the Willow Trees that clog our waterways,Olive Trees that out compete native vegetation and a variety of noxious weeds like Lantana that literally kill wildlife
It might not save the planet but by doing something positive the future doesn't look quite so bleak.
All we can do is lead our lives in the best enviromental way possible
within reason
cheers

Re: Global warming?...really?
.......what the article fails to mention is that the Cretaceous warming (and others recorded at various periods of the earth's history) led to large-scale extinctions because of concomitant effects such as sea-level change, marine salinity-decrease and changes in weather, especially in rainfall-pattern leading to inundation/desertification. While microbes such as bacteria would (or could) be largely unaffected, more stenotopic groups (basically most multicellular organisms) would have been subject to drastic and unsurvivable changes in their environmental conditions. The fossil record evidences such periodic extinctions (making a nice change from the usual meteoritic impacts).
So, as a paradigm for current events, it's not too optimistic........

Re: Global warming?...really?
It's a pretty thin argument for continuing to pour millions of tons of waste gases into the atmosphere, though. And make no mistake, the vast majority of scientists are NOT arguing about IF, only about WHEN.
BTW, the geological evidence also suggests that we're well overdue for another Ice Age- which might (however temporarily) solve Global Warming......

Re: Global warming?...really?
Global temperature increase is NOT a theory- it's supported by a large body of evidence (I will provide 150 references if you're interested): the consequences and causes may be subject to some debate (often by the usual special-interest groups), but that is not to deny the reality that humanity is drinking in the Last-Chance Saloon with respect to the environment- the damage being inflicted is unsustainable even in the relatively short-term.
The danger lies not so much in the predictable effects, but the fact that global weather systems, as has been pointed out above, are not susceptible to extremely accurate mathematical modelling.
It's usually the unkown or unexpected that presents the greatest danger.

Re: Global warming?...really?
...but all this about WHICH car is irrelevant- you're fighting against human short-termism- the real problem is that we need to cut ALL emissions, whatever the source, drastically and immediately.....

Re: Yes, really.
Wish I'd read this post a bit earlier- that'll teach me to use FlatView.
I'd just add that ozone-depletion leads to increase penetrance by UV-B: which in large doses is fatal to all life.
