Ah yes, John Wayne---the man who won the second world war single-handed. Except he was hiding in Hollywood during hostilities, unlike a true hero such as Jimmy Stewart who flew bombing missions over Germany, but didn't boast about it afterwards.

Wayne is an example for other leading men. Par example:

Stallone, aka Rambo, refuses to come to Europe for Cannes Film Festival due to fear of being targeted after US bombing raids on Libya.

Willis, aka John "Die Hard" Maclaine, chickens out of giving film lecture in London in wake of September 11 attacks because al Qaida would obviously choose any plane he travelled on for special consideration.

And then there's young Tiger Woods, the golfer who could teach those Hollywood hardmen a lesson. Knowing full well that hostilities were going to break out in Iraq, he still travelled to the Gulf area to take part in a tournament in spite of being the most high-profile golfer on the planet, and in spite of several others (non-Americans) pulling out in fear of their safety.

Crikey, isn't it easy to have a go at the yanks. Charlton Heston is an utter twat who believes everyone in the US should be able to own a gun. And shoot each other presumably. Fuckin idiot !

Are you surprised? Elia Kazan, for all the good he did in movies, was demonised for the rest of his life for naming names during the McCarthy hearings. It doesn't matter how much good you do if you choose the wrong side in an emotive issue.

Without resurrecting the guns argument, I have to say I was disappointed with his stance on it. Much of his politics I opposed, but to me (and I repeat, to me) he was defending the indefensible.

Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the USSR, actually took place in June 1941. The Japanese did not attack Pearl Harbour until December of that year. The invasion of the Soviet Union was the beginning of the period when Hitler was becoming irrational. The invasion itself was, from a German point of view, sensible, as it gave Germany access to raw materials etc not otherwise available to the Axis. What was irrational was the sadistic nature of the campaign. Many citizens of the USSR despised Stalin and there can be little doubt would have supported the Germans if they had adopted a more humane policy. It is also worth pointing out that at the various wartime & post war conferences, the two American Presidents, Roosevelt & Truman quite often supported Stalin against Churchill.
