They do. No one seems to have answered your original question. They wait until after the 9pm 'watershed', with very rare exceptions. (I put that last bit in as someone would be sure to quote an exception if I didn't.)

And the 9.00pm watershed idea is a joke. It assumes that no kids are watching TV after 9.00pm.
Perhaps its a subtle way of avoiding embarassment for parents. The kids are in their bedrooms watching so they are not downstairs asking awkward questions.

What really pisses me off is when films shown after the watershed are edited for language, sex and violence yet home made dramas regularly broadcast far more explicit scenes than those which are cut from the films!
There are very few dramas these days that are not preceeded by an announcement that "the following programme contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature"

it was used last night in the film "the astronaut's wife" (C4) by johnny depp.
Re: TV progs where the word "c*nt" was used
That's what I tried to get over to them: that it was a poor substitute for meaningful language. To be fair, I swear like a trooper at work, more as a sort of punctuation than anything else, but am careful to eschew it in 'sensitive' situations.
The point is also well-made that profanity's adverbial use as intensifiers is greatly diminished by constant repetition.

Re: TV progs where the word "c*nt" was used
How very true
My swearing days are well and truly over
Swearing might be a release valve for many but for mine its just a sign of a lack of self control
If someone wants to call me a fucking cunt or a dickhead
I'd just laugh in his/her face
Call me an idiot and you'll get a response(something like-takes one to know one) but a fucking idiot (that conjurs up and idiot(drooling probably) getting lucky...I'd probably piss myself laughing
Do these terms actually have a meaning or is it meant to be purely derogatory?
I've never understood how all these swear words came about
Is it that we hate our bodies?
Perceive them as ugly?
Most swear words seem to be about the body and sex
Quite strange
cheers

I rather liked Kimball Kinnison's line in one of the Lensman series: "Men swear, to keep from crying- women cry, to keep from swearing".

Re: TV progs where the word "c*nt" was used
Sorry, did I give the impression I thought that swearing was smart? The pushing the envelope remark was meant about the quality of writing in Six Feet Under and The Sopranos, for example. The swearing, if anything, takes some of the power away from the drama, and seems too false and staged at times.
