HBO productions use the ripest language all the time: Sex And The City, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos for example. Unlike fuck, which is used so often that it's lost a lot of its power, cunt can still shock, though.

You tell him he is far more mature than the people who think swearing is somehow 'pushing the envelope' or being 'adult'.

As a child I remember all the sad, sappy fare that came from the US. The dreaded TV movies: McMillan And Wife (never was Susan St James safer in a bedroom scene), McCloud, Banacek et al. I don't get cable or satellite stuff, but what little of HBO's output I've seen certainly appears to be pushing the envelope as far as drama is concerned. NYPD is a fine show, and uses great writing and dialogue to avoid seeming left behind by the more explicit drama productions.

HBO stuff is shown on Channel 4 over here (classic moment from Mona Lisa, when Robbie Coltrane comes into a room while Bob Hoskins is watching a video of his prostitute princess being shagged; "Is that Channel 4?"), a station that still has its moments when it's not pushing reality TV bollocks or endless programmes of lists.

Whether I have kids or not is not the issue (and why do some parents assume they are the Fount of All Wisdom where paediatric science is concerned, and that only parents know anything about kids? Not from my experience, they're not.........they learn as they go along, if at all, like everyone else).
As a matter of fact, I once had step-kids, and in that situation I explained that such language was offensive to many people, and that out of consideration they out not to use it: and that it's usually a sign of a poor vocabulary and not therefore all that cool.
If my 7,10 and 12-y-o's got the message, you oughtn't to have too many problems.
But I agree the TV companies ought to act more responsibly.

Not heard the c-word used yet on tv but I've seen a load of programmes presented by one. Richard Madeley to name the biggest of them all!
