"Metropolitan Police" Computer Virus

Has anyone else suffered from what seems to be known as the Metropolitan Police Virus?

My PC is protected by the latest version of Norton, but 3 times it has completely jammed with just a full screen demanding ?100 to be paid by Ucash to clear it. Re-booting it results in the same screen being displayed.

The screen claims that the PC has been locked because it's been used for child pornography, viewing illegal sites, terrorist activities, etc.

Of course this is a scam as, if it was genuine, there would be other payment options such as credit cards. Paying by Ucash is like sending cash to someone you don't know at a location you don't know.

I've had my PC unjammed by PC World twice but it jammed up again yesterday and will probably have to have its hard drive completely wiped.

Like all readers of this forum, I view the occasional porn site, but nothing illegal. There seems to be numerous and increasing numbers of sites that (probably inadvertently) spread the virus to anyone who views them.

Does anyone know of a foolproof anti-virus device that can protect PCs from this pernicious virus? In fact I'm told it's not technically a virus, so Norton doesn't effectively intercept it.

Had a PC at work come up with the same message a few months ago.
Could do much about, so had to re-install PC.

Try either Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool





and/or

Superantispyware



portable version


If you download on another PC write to a CD-RW to transfer, DO NOT use a USB pen.



If the PC will fully not boot try the Kaspersky Rescue CD



Maybe the Superantispyware portable version latter will run from a Windows 7 PE boot disc.

I'm sure other BGAFD members will have more suggestions too.

Got this message a while ago.
What I did was turn off PC, start up in safe mode, install Malwarebytes (anti malware, free software, google it), run a scan, it should find it and remove it.
Start up normally and it should be gone.

I concur Malwarebytes is another good free tool.

It's another virus which is getting quite famous at the moment. Can slip through many of the best anti-virus programs, but it is actually very easy to remove it.

as mentioned above. Just boot in safe mode, run malwarebytes and it'll get rid of it.

Dump Norton if you can, it's worse than useless.
BitDefender will see you OK.
Problem with Norton though is, the only way you can remove it completely is to reformat your drive.

I've only scan read the page but one potential flaw is advising to download to USB storage rather than a CD(-RW) so virus file(s) can not be passed on.

If you have a net book pick-up a USB CD/DVD drive from eBay etc. both for recovery and creating backups.
