Given the current climate, why not just stop making hardcore porn until their is a definite tested cure for the HIV virus? That's not far away (current scientific estimates vary between 2-10 years) and obviously non-contact softcore - nude etc - would not be affected.
What's wrong with this suggestion? "Porn is my livelihood". OK, so what's wrong with switching to softcore (the market for that will exapand if hardcore is suspended) or taking a sabbatical in a different career? Most pornsters are part-time/amateur types, how many full-time professionals are there in the UK porn industry at present? A few dozen? It's hardly comaparable with the hundred thousand plus who lost their jobs when the UK's mines closed. Or the steelworks. And so on.
How would the punters react? They'd be pissed off, right? I doubt it. Speaking as a punter myself I'd be fucking glad if the hardcore industry took five years off. We are over saturated. There are thousands and thousands of films out there I haven't yet seen. The shops haven't got room on the shelves (eg I acquired British Bukkake Babes today from my regular store, but only by insisting they check if they had it - it wasn't on the shelves and they ended up having to dig around in a storeroom for twenty minutes to find it) and we punters haven't got the money to keep up with the various studios' output. A moratorium on new productions would give me a much needed opportunity to "catch up" with a fraction of them. And if it saves performers' lives in the meantime well that's an even better reason.
In summary, instead of arguing about 28 days v 30 days (what petty differentiation is that?), condoms v no condoms, etc, let's just stop making hardcore until HIV/AIDS is cured. Should be easier for UK producers than those of many other nations (as hardcore has only recently become a legal commodity in this country anyway). If this eminently sensible suggestion sounds too radical to you, dear director/performer/producer, then just shut about certificates and the like and accept the risks associated with your obvious greed.

interesting idea, although I don't believe it will be achievable given competitive pressures etc.
