addendum: I've also checked my user settings (editing post defaults). to my surprise, by default everything related towards bbcode was disabled, even if the editor tells me otherwise. I've changed my user settings now and hope this will solve the problem.

They work for me:

ok. now here too. the grouping of user setting options is pretty strange in PHPbb. They have

"Enable smilies by default" in "Edit Posting Defaults" - which i have enabled yesterday. And now i've seen a second option just for this minor important feature to be set in "Edit Display Options".

We could stick that thread, because I assume others are struggling with the settings too.

i'm sure phpbb has the option to stick threads, seen it before. presumably it's just been labelled differently, like "announcement" or "notification".
