technical question - when you merge profiles, wouldn't it be possible to keep a page redirect for the profile which gets removed instead of loosing it entirely? assuming that some people have bookmarks to a specific model, they will still be able to find their model when her page gets merged with a different one..

same with all the XNKs, which most of the time gain a change log entry in the unknowns identified list but not always?

Unfortunately it's not possible. You have to search the removed profile with her alias.
Often it's possible to find her in the forum as in this cas Cassandra [6].

The unknown identified list needs an update. It's not possible to update the list at the moment. But we keep a list in the background to update the list if it's possible again.
