There isn't a method of age verification that is economically viable. A web site could not afford to spend 50 p or even 1p to allow any random person to casually view the public pages of a web site. No one who is based outside the UK is gonna take a blind bit of notice. And if they get blocked to UK viewers so be it.
Meanwhile people might like to consider whether this measure is prompted by concern to protect young people. Frankly I cannot think quite how they are being protected anyway. But have a look who is behind it.
The Bill's sponsor is former DCMS Minister John Whittingale. He's all for "protecting children". He has a brother who was a prominent member of the notorious Paedophile Information Exchange. He was sentenced very recently to 13 years for sexual abuse of young boys in his care as a teacher. Not necessarily Whittingdale's fault. But when asked what he wanted to say about the matter. He replied "No Comment". Doesn't sit well with his volubility when he's protecting children in the House of Commons. And actually his sex life is rather colourful too. Though he he'd rather the newspapers did not report that he "dates" women who keep "dungeons" in Earls Court. Not that he used his position to stop the Mail and the Sun and the Standard from reporting this. No they all spent lots of time an money investigtin the story in depth only to suddenly drop it for unexplained reasons that had nothing to do with Whittingdales position in Government. Then there is Michael Rock, Cameron's advisor who was the architect of the porn filters to "protect children". Prosecuted for downloading paedophile porn. The police even raided No 10 to take away computer equipment.
What to do. Well get a VPN. Everyone should anyway. Secondly vote for someone not in the Tory party, not in the Labour party at the upcoming election. It goes without saying not to vote for Ukip or any other fascist organisation.

That nonsense about "protecting the children" is one of the many all too used phrases of the oppressor.
If parents are concerned about their children's internet usage, they should supervise their kids or install something like Net Nanny instead of relying upon the state to do their job for them.

I couldnt agree more with all thats been said but the fact is the time for saying it has sailed and the law has been passed.
We all know full well what the limitations are and those who do know will prepare themselves accordingly to change.
You can fight it of course but the risks are a great deal higher now and if anything this might deter new people from setting up sites by leaving it in the hands of the corproate few who can afford it and stem the tide of new sites somewhat. It seems the the powers that be behind the Digital Economy Act have found a way of keeping its well manicured hands clean by getting someone else to handle all that dirty money
