I have some video footage which I am trying to edit.
Imagine the camera has been put on its side and the video shot that way.
Im trying to get the footage turnned around so its the right way up but will fill the whole screen from left to right.
If this makes sense?
Anybody know a program that will do this?

Hi, Knobby.

You could do something with this footage in any of the standard editing programs - final cut pro, premiere or any of the cheaper alternatives.

But first you need to work out what you're trying to achieve. The only ways to get footage shot in 'portrait' orientation to fill a normal 'landscape' format screen without bars at the sides are to either squeeze it unacceptably or to zoom in on part of the frame - possibly varying the part of the image shown shot by shot using the pan and scan technique that was used to format widescreen films for transmission on 4:3 TV.

In short, it'll be a heck of a lot of work and I don't think it'll be worthwhile unless the footage is totally unique. Sorry.

The footage as is would be good for showing on those portrait format screens on tube escalators. Unfortunately I don't think TfL would take kindly to having pornstars bouncing about next to their passengers, though it would brighten up many a dull commute! :-)

I agree completely. I'm assuming the camera shoots in 16:9 or some other widescreen format?

You'll have to set realistic expectations when you rotate the frame because the aspect ratio is so different. Unless you can crop the frame appropriately, which will probably result in quality loss to maintain the resolution, there's no real way to rotate the frame and keep it to fill the screen from right to left without giving the performer the proportions of Jabba the Hutt.

Right ok I hear ya,thanks for the info.

The moral of this it seems is dont let sombody else pick your camera up and think they being smart by turning it round to get a longer looking picture.
