Free Age Verification Systems

Does anyone know of any FREE age verification systems (AVS) that I can use to protect my site?

I am not interested in charging money for people to look at the member?s area of my site but want to ensure the visitors are over 18.

Do free AVS systems exist or are age verification systems always linked to billing to view the member?s area of a site?

How exactly would you validate them without asking for a credit card?

The only 'real' ways aside from asking peope to send 2 forms of ID, a couple of bank statements and their banks pin number in the post (sorry watching phone jacker hehehe) is to ask them to make a payment. :P

You can either do this Via an adult mobile phone payment where the phone user has to be tagged Adult, which usually means if your a contract customer and you phone up and ask, or pay and go customers go into their providers shop and ask them to tick that box, then charge the person a 1 off payment of say ?3, of you can bill them once every 6 months with ccbill of say ?5 i'm not sure what the limits are tho as I've never tried to charge as little as possible :P

Thanks for your reply.

I can see what you say about paying money on a card but why do the visitors have to pay for every site?

Is there a system where the visitor registers with a central site (by paying a small fee on the card) so they have access to all sites which use that system i.e. sort of central age check if you see what I mean.

A few sites set them up, where you paid once and that gained you access to dozens of sites, but most of them died off or was bought out by bigger sites.

Both are known, but both charge the customer.

Thanks for the links they were very helpful.

Is there another way around the problem i.e. can you set ccBill or Verotel up to charge nothing (or a nominal amount such as 1p) for membership so the visitors have to register a credit card but don?t get charged?

Yes, you read correctly. I want my site to be free while I build the hits up.

At the moment all I want to do is make sure the visitors are all over 18.

Well in truth there is no way to do this... they can cheat AVS the same way they can cheat a billing company like CCBill... well to my knowledge anyways...

Do people even join AVS sites nowadays anyways... most are just cons !

As you say whatever is set up someone will find a way around.

At the moment my site doesn?t have any explicit nudity but if I wanted to put up (legal in the UK with full 2257 documentation) explicit pictures what measures would I need to take? As we have just worked out there are ways around credit card age verification.

It is acceptable/legal to just put a disclaimer on the front of the site and say ?over 18?s only??

Wow... where to start... and at nearly 1am (which is actually early for me, just tired tonight !)

2257 is US law... you need to put a 2257 disclaimer if you want to sell your product however as most likely you will be billing with a US based company.

Do you host in the US or Uk... if UK I would suggest moving to a US based company such as Colo Cation... UK companies are funny about anything adult, and charge about 10 times what they do in the US for bandwidth...

if you have a splash page that states it's for 18 and over then you are pretty covered... however in some US states it's 21... you should look at some of the adult paysites and see the splash pages they use... and copy the text to get it right...

So yes a Splash page and 2257 compliance statement and away you go... beyond that there isnt anything you can do... then I would suggest stayign away from AVS and just go with a billign company like CCBill... add regional billing and cascading billing with a secondary processor and away you go :)
