Can anybody recommend a reliable payment system for shopping carts that deal with adult material?

We have our own cart system so just need a company to process the actual payments.

What sort of material? If you mean HC / R18 DVD's then you are wasting your time looking for a company in the UK and if you go outside the UK you will lose a big part of your customer base as you most likely wont be able to accept Switch cards - if you mean SC / 18 DVDs and lingerie, toys etc then check out Worldpay.
