I was recently shown a site called alexa.com and it was explained to me what "Traffic" statistics etc mean in the real world. I'm curious to know how reliable this site is thought to be as, judging from what I've found, I've heard a hell of a lot of bullshit regarding websites over the years!

I think you can only look at an alexa ranking as an indication to how popular the site is. There are ways to exploit Alexa to bump your ranking, but I can't see why anyone would bother with doing it. Personally I wouldn't read much into it.

then again if you know what your talking about and type in certain websites alexa states facts not fiction and it would take near rocket science to manipulate!

try putting http://www.onlytease.com in alexa interesting reading :)

I had a small site before that had a little member area and on the alexa it wasn't even in the top 100000 or whatever it is but yet I got a regular few members, another girl I knew had a site that was listed in the top 100000 but got less members than me, so what sense does it make and what is the point of it, I don't know but then it's not my area of expertise so probably shouldn't be commenting.

usually people who are not listed highly on alexa say IT MEANS ABSOLUTLY ZERO

Why would anyone manipulate Alexa for what gain exactly????

Try putting the bgafd in Alexa does that look like it is manipulated to you??

Haveing a few members does not push your ranking up on Alexa it does not measure sign ups

Did i say bgafd manipulate the rankings??

Someone mentioned that they can be manipulated but why would ANYONE bother doing that???

This site shows just how much traffic websites get not how many people join them but then if you have masses of traffic then obviously your bound to get sign ups

bgafd gets lots of traffic thats a fact so they dont need to manipulate anything

I'm no expert on web business but the guy who showed me alexa.com is heavily into online business (Making more money than Whitney Houston's crack dealer incidentally) and his company use alexa.com to keep tabs on other sites. I did a bit of research myself and it backs up a lot of my suspicions and my in-built bullshitter detector.
