I have seen for sale a dvd recorder that the blurb on the box says will allow you to archive all those vhs tape to dvd. Lets face it our vhstapes and machines are getting old any one had - + experiences. I for one have a pile old magmas and vto and would like to save these. I have recorded them to computer but they seemed to be copies of copies when I bought them the result was not good. I hope not off topic

have cheepest one from Oopla, was 110 ?(now back to 199?)in Mediamarkt.
can put vhs or tv feed, camera to dvd+r in 1,2,4 or 6 hour qualities..
6 h = vcd quality, up to 4 h is especially good for loops & old videos.
Have put all my old us/euro comp. on dvd, still a lot of French stuff to do...
if u want decent quality & maybe an internal database to make own comp.,get an expensiver from 300-400? range.
good luck,zushiomaru

I use the Panasonic E55 which does DVD-R and DVD-RAM.
This has been discussed on the OT Forum several times and you may find it useful to look there.
You can get there via the drop down menu on the top right of this page.

Alec I've seen the Panasonic e55 in a high street store. I might buy it, however do you see that the copy of a vhs tape is worth the effort of making a backup copy (most vhs porn seems copy of copy of a copy...ect)?
I assume the panasonic has an encoding chip that clears up the image, my experience of capturing via a computer not good...grainy and washed out color.
Just a digression i have found and my friends have found that those tapes we bought from dealers have in the end turned out to be just crap quality...copies and poor quality tapes. And for all the talk of quality of dvd recordings I have found that all these dvds are just "Shrink" re-encoded, yet they charge 35 pounds for the buggers.

I transfer to DVD-R mainly in order to save space. The picture quality is no worse and sometimes it clears up a little noise. If the tape is over two hours long I put it onto two DVD-Rs. You can get cases which are the same size as commercial DVD cases but which hold three DVDs - half the width of a video cassette without a box. There are also slimline cases for single or double DVDs, half as wide again.
I agree that many commercial DVDs are overpriced and taken from video. Sometimes this is OK as they take them from good quality originals and this is the only way to get re-releases of old titles, but some American studfios are very poor quality - the Taboo American Style series springs to mind.

I got an idea a standalone dvd reorder just does a better job than a computer video capture card. Again I have noted most dvd are just "rips" from an original dvd.
