hi,

Arte(german/french tv channel) just gave an insightful docu on the author of
Sch?lmadchen & various others made by Alfred Vohrer...

Almost all the people(critics, directors,Hanna Schygulla)were against it,
only producer Wolf C. Hartwig was trying to defend the money-making genre.

It started w a warning, coz most of the times they don't show so much nudity on this Artsy channel, all the full frontal nudity was from the Schulm?dchen series, some violence as well, especially from ep 3.
(dir.by Ernst Hofbauer)
think they are almost all av. in Germany on DVD.
there's also Jess Franco's episode out in USA as Virgin Report?

This (Millionaire)writer Johannes Mario Simmel wrote books as
Alle menschen werden Bruder(sorry,if i don't use the right capitals, never figured that out in Germany),
Liebe ist nur ein wort,G?tt sch?tzt die Liebenden,Die Antwort kennt nur der Wind,Und Jimmy ging zum Regenbogen...

One looked very promising w an actress singing in a nightclub during a striptease, looked very Jess Franco-like,could he found some mustard here?? or is it the other way round??

The critics ramble on about how it ruined the whole German Arthouse scene like Fassbinder,Werner Herzog...(could be they just made anything good in the late 70s,80s perhaps)IMHO.

Volker Schl?ndorff made some good remarks however..
Ulrich Schamoni's Es('65)was seen as an early shockingly bare movie for it's time as well, comparing it to the French scene w Godard,Truffaut,etc..
(While showing posters of soft movies like Emmanuelle & hard like Exhibition!!!)

that's about it, i won't tell everything.(my German ain't that good,it was dubbed in French,if they re-run it, i'll rec on dvd-r as german dub,u can choose w this channel!!)
For the connaisseurs:some other people who talked before the camera,
critic Ponkie,directors Edgar Reitz,Margareth von Trotta(who didn't even see a dirty movie!)Hans Christoph Blumenberg)

Softy Sex des Seventies or Vom Sex bis Simmel directed by
Hans G?nter Pflaum,Peter H Schr?der

(ps:trades to my email only,on dvd+r)

Vohrer didn't make any of the Sch?lmadchen-Reports, but quite a few of those Simmel Films. His closest thing to a sexfilm was Verbrechen nach Schulschluss.

> think they are almost all av. in Germany on DVD.

Think again.
The Schulmaedchen-Report are available on DVD in Japan (!), parts 1-10, though these suffered hefty cuts (7-10 was left unscathed, but the Japs removed all incest episodes from the early films).
I haven't seen the Simmel films out on DVD yet, but that's just a matter of time.

> there's also Jess Franco's episode out in USA as Virgin Report?

It's more like a mondo movie than a report film, despite the title.

Most of these have some nudity. The nightclub scene is probably (I don't have access to Arte) from Alle Menschen werden Br?der, because Elisabeth Volkmann played a stripper in that film, and I don't recall nightclub scenes in any of the other Simmel films you listed.

70?s in Germany: Success with Softsex & Simmel

"Von Sex bis Simmel
Dokumentarfilm, Deutschland 2004, Erstausstrahlung ARTE
Regie: Hans G?nther Pflaum, Peter H. Schr?de"

it could be that the documentary will be available on p2p networks soon.

a more ideological & sophisticated document as a descriptive documentary Pro: "Junger deutscher Film" -- Contra: the greedy old film business people

Left-Winger Pflaum is one of Germany?s prominent film critic ...
and he is naturally on the side of the " Young German Movie" movement
against the "Schund & Schmutz" & " Kolportage" movies in the 70?s.

but all these movies were box office hits ( Schulm?dchen / Simmel)
in contrary to the art movies of Reitz, Herzog, Fassbinder etc.
the old business people were clever enough
to take over elements (sexual libertinage) from this movement
for their own financially highly successful productions.

of course they play the same program but one's horribly dubbed in French over the German!!

Stripper mentioned seems the correct one.
As i said, i only zapped thru the dvd & watched bits of it,
i didn't say they all made softcore movies, all concerned Simmel adaptations...

IMO they made the docu w the wrong people to interview.
They should've got Ernst Hofbauer,Gunter Otto,Hans Billian,Henri Sala?,
Pete Tombs,Lucas Balbo,Ingrid Steeger(?:),Gina Janssen,Gabriel Pontello,Jean-Pierre Armand,Richard Lemieuvre(still alive somewhere?), Sepp Geissl!!
directed by Christian Kessler & Peter Blumenstock, perhaps??
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
stumbled on Gisela Hahn interview(of Franco's Devil Hunter/Jungfrau unter Kannibalen, italian Contamination,Julia(w Sylvia Kristel),..)

just found out about another Hans Billian out on Seduction Cinema/Retro collection label.(w spicy, soft amateur shorts w Misty Mundae added)

"I like the girls who do" or Liebesjagd durch Sieben Betten(1973)

only 15$ at cduniverse!!

bye,zushiomaru
ps:DJones:want French docu !! email me privately.

Hofbauer is dead AFAIK.
G. Otto only started as a director when the period they were covering was virtually over. Focus of the film was apparently the German cinema of the early 1970s, because that was the last time it still had commercial clout to the extent that it dominated the domestic cinema screens.
HC porn came a bit later in Germany, from 1975, and access was strictly regulated.

Steeger is still rather coy about that period, probably because she never quite managed to free herself from her early 1970s image; and to be honest: I always had the impression that she's a bit of an airhead, not the best person you'd wish to interview. Perhaps Danning or Volkmann, or even Rinaldo Talamonti. Gneissl and even Janssen were only bit players in German softporn, HC was a different matter.

steeger=airhead=dummkopf??????????

knows anybody here the "sexrolle"???
over 2 hours long-from the sixties/seventies pioneertime-last half seen months ago nightly in german local tv "ndr"-was very cool-also with rare steeger interview from 1970...
the "arte" film "von sex bis simmel" was very boring-a little bit "gaga"!
