Someone with a greater knowledge of the subject than myself, at the time, once told me that many of the performers in the top German adult films of the late 70's appeared in the live sex shows in some of the top clubs, particularly in Hamburg. I have seen no evidence to support this. Is anyone able to say if it was true or not?

Well, I cannot tell for sure, but there is supporting evidence: most famous of these clubs was the Salambo, and its stage shows were organised by Rene Durand. Durand had several walk-on parts in German (soft) sex films, usually (but not always) playing himself.
In some softporn films cast members are credited to be Salambo performers, e.g. in "Wer einmal in das Posthorn stoesst", und I am pretty sure there are quite a few more - a good promotional vehicle.
There are also quite a few German porn flicks with stage show scenes, and it is not too far fetched to assume that at least some of them were performed by the regulars. For example, "Cabaret d'Amor" is full of stage scenes, and in one we see XNK0662 performing. Others with stage show scenes are "Rosi Nimmersatt" and "Maedchen, die am Wege liegen".
