Can anyone tell me why the European adult film industry is so keen on using a large number of aliases for actresses.? I realise they are unlikely to wish to use their real names but the same person using a half dozen or more different names makes little sense. The US industry generally stick to just one or two names.

My pet theory is that the girls are secondary to the action. In American movies the girls are seen as celebraties in own right whether the action is good or not. A european tape is just better action

One reason may well be that many porn girls first entered the porn circles as a way to straight cinema, which never really happened. brigitte Lahaye eventually made non-porn movies and Tabatha Cash played in Thomas Gilou's film "Ra?". But most of these girls got trapped in porn.
Martine Grimaud can be seen for a few seconds among a group of theatre students in Andr? Cayatte's "Mourir d'aimer", which she was before trying her way in porn.
As straight films were often produced by people opposed to porn, it would have been a bad choice to appear under their real names in these films which would have banned them from the formers (which actually happened to nearly all of them).

speaking of bit parts in mainstream movies,
Brigitte Lahaie tried it as B. Simenon. Claudine Beccarie was in Andrej Zulawski's "L'important c'est d'aimer" but she could be cast especially for the part, like Lahaie in Henry & June...

Why did Karin/Karine Gambier call herself Stephen,Sanson,...sometimes even Schubert to confuse her w her German name-sake.

As in the States it's mostly done to cover up the amount of titles one worked on per year,u can't release 10 or more movies a year.
So directors like Jess Franco & D'amato use different names loaned from their friends or studio(like Eurocine, who used the 'James Gartner'name for all directors working their, who didn't want the credit)

Besides all that there's of course the typo's & errors on prints/boxart/magazines... And those Italian sites:(

Other 'respectable' directors like Max Pecas, Claude Mulot (Brigade des Moeurs) and even Jose Benazeraf used them to cover up their dirty deeds.

Heh heh heh. Not quite.
Believe me, U.S.A. porn females also try to get away with name changes. Most of the time, it's because they believe their new name is sexier, or it will enable them to get better roles.
Jordan Lee has appeared in movies credited as
Samantha
Nikki Lee
Samantha Sweet

Kandi Connor has used the names (granted; some of these are spelling variants, but you would feel a Screen Actor Guild consortium would standardize a porn performer's name)
Candy Connor
Candy Connors
Cindi Connor
Carol Conners
Kandi Kisses
Candi Cash
Candy Cash
