If this can include people living aswell as dead, I would say the people I'd want to come would be:

Tony Benn
George Orwell
Enoch Powell
Martin Amis

Would make one interesting evening of chat. I can't really think of four who I'd not want to come, it would be pointless to have them there.

George Orwell
Richard Feynman
Bertrand Russell
Jimmy Page

As for those who I'd avoid having dinner with.......well, the list is too long.

Come on, Arg....it's your thread. What are your choices?

Assuming we can invite people from the past.

I think I might enjoy the company of:

Jack Nicholson
Richard Burton
Liz Taylor
Sharon Stone

well, for 1 dinner anyway.

Tempting but while John would make my four I think a bit of variety would be in order.
Other possibles could be

Men;

Spike Milligan
William Burroughs
David Niven

Women:

Shirley Maclaine
Germaine Greer
Linda Lovelace

A mix and match from that lot would keep me amused
