Reading this article I was struck by how similar things are today as they were fifty years ago during the Profumo scandal.

Then and now we have a public school ruling class government more concerned about imposing a moral code on the ?plebs? than dealing with their own sleaze.

It's still one rule for us, another rule for the rest of you.

The effect of the Mandy Rice-Davis/Christine Keller/Stephen Wall/John Profumo thing in Britain in the 1960's was, and is, comparable to Watergate in America some years later. The former left a very ugly shadow over British politics, just like the latter did on American politics. Trust in politicians was hugely reduced after that and it stays low to this day. Here is a book about what Watergate did to trust in American politics, and I think someone should write one about what the Profumo scandal did to British politics:

Honest as well as sassy, she admitted having one sexual encounter, (unremunerated) at Ward?s home with Lord Astor. This produced from Ward?s inadequate counsel, the most disastrous question ever asked in the history of cross-examination: Don?t you know that Lord Astor has denied your allegation?? The transcript reports the reply as: ?Well (giggle) he would, wouldn?t he??

She was a good looking girl though - lucky old sod Lord Astor I say.

I'm not sure they're comparable at all. One very junior minister of the government (not even in the Cabinet) resigns after lying to the House is not really the same thing as the US president resigning.

It was bigger than what you describe, Profumo was Minister For War - what is today called the Defence Secretary. That is a senior position. Also Christine Keller (Keeler, or however you spell it) claimed in the late-1980's that Stephen Ward was spying and was involved at more than just a social level with the Russian Naval Attache who he knew. When the film 'Scandal' came out in 1988 she became well known again and started appearing on chat shows. I remember watching her on 'Wogan' and she made the claim. So we have Profumo, pals with high-society doctor Stephen Ward, Profumo is banging two bimbos who are both being pimped by Ward, and Ward is mates (professionally aswell as socially) with a Russian Naval Attache. Was Profumo in with the Russians? Was there a lot more to this than just illicit affairs and lying to Parliament? I guess we'll never know for sure as Stephen Ward killed himself, Profumo is also dead, so is Mandy Rice Davis, and so is the Russian Naval Attache. The only one left is Christine Keller. Yes, Christine Keeler has said lots of things over the years. Doesn't mean that they are true.

Again, doesn't make it true. Yes, she was interviewed by Sue Lawley who had an obvious disdain for her.

Ward wasn't "pimping" anyone.

The Minster of Defence (renamed the Secretary of State for Defence in 1964) was the Cabinet Post that the Secretary of State for War (Profumo) reported to.

The Secretary of State for War was not a Cabinet Post.

I agree that there is more to "this".

"This" being that lots of up-standing establishment figures were caught with their trousers down, dipping their wicks whilst preaching moral values to the plebs.

We are back to my first post. The Tories have this habit of preaching moral and ?family? values to the lower classes whilst they get away with shagging for England.

Examples are :-

Macmillan / Home governments of the early 1960?s and the Profumo affair. Read the first link and explain why the 1963 trial papers are sealed until 2046.

Then there was Major in the Early 1990?s with his ?Back to Basics? campaign. Remember that? Preaching family values to the plebs whilst a string of Conservative MPs were involved in sex scandals. David Mellor, Alan Amos, Tim Yeo, Michael Brown for starters.

The scandals of the 1980?s Thatcher era have still to be exposed (if they ever are).




Lets not forget that The Right Honourable The Lady Thatcher LG OM PC FRS and Sir Jimmy Savile OBE KCSG were the best of friends. I give them their full titles to prove how establishment these people are and how they look after their own.

Finally here we are in 2014 with another Tory government imposing moral values on what internet adult content I?m allowed to view in my own home whilst they get up to what I wonder.

It makes me sick.

All politicians are hypocrites, but Tories really do take the biscuit.
