I wondered if government policy had ever been changed by one of these petitions. They may have gone along with one that was heading in the same direction they wanted to go, but have they ever changed course?

I get the feeling they're like those pelican crossings at road junctions, they have a button to press to make you feel better, but it doesn't actually affect anything.

Your statement on pelican crossings is incorrect.

At a true pelican crossing the button ALWAYS changes the lights - otherwise the lights would simply never change at all. At a traffic light junction the light changes are often pre-programmed during the day, but if so then pressing the button will still work between midnight and 7am.

Transport For London say that overall pressing the button will work at around 80% of pedestrian crossings in London during the day and at 100% of them during their night hours.

Just going by a discussion I had with a friend a while ago.

He uses the same crossing everyday on his way to and from work, and through repeated observation, worked out that the only thing that changed by pressing the button was the beep was activated when the lights changed to red, the timing never altered.

This was at a major junction though, where probably 4-5 sets of lights wold have needed to be re-sequenced, rather than just a simple road crossing.

If it's a MAJOR junction the light changes would be pre-programmed and could not be changed by pressing the button.

Tell your friend to try between midnight and 7am.
