Driving home my ears were stunned and offended by Jools Holland and Kylie Minogue's shocking "cover" of the all time classic "Should I stay or should I go?". Is nothing sacred? I like Jools, his live show is superb and Kylie is gorgeous but dear oh dear no some songs are national treasures and should be protected by law!

The most extreme murdering of a famous song by someone else was undoubtedly what the Pet Shop Boys did to 'Where The Streets Have No Name' by U2. I remember a U2 fan magazine at the time, I think it was in 1991, summed it up in two words. They said the Pet Shop Boys had "absolutely massacred" the song. Here it is:

Rolf doing Stairway on his digderidoo (hope that is the correct spelling) was tantamount to a war crime in many Led Zep fans opinion.

People who are very familiar with the original version of the U2 song can contrast the classic that is with the version the Pet Shop Boys did. I remember Bono was asked at the time what he thought of the Pet Shop Boys' version, he said he didn't like it. The Pet Shop Boys were critical of him being so critical. Bono responded to that by saying "what have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this..." Lol. (for those not aware, that is a line from a Pet Shop Boys song).
