During the Troubles in Ireland, and even before, there was something
splendidly 18th century in watching dear old Ian spitting hellfire and
damnation at papists, the Pope, even young people dancing ! You
knew where you were with Ian. I found, still find, the later Paisley,
working in the new Northern Ireland Govt with Martin McGuinness, IRA
ex-chief of staff, as hard to fathom. I like to think - since Ian always
seemed sincere in all his beliefs - that he felt that if McGuinness could
bend a bit, so should he, and in their mutual accommodation, lead their
people into better times.....Still, when he gets to the Pearly Gates up there,
God help Heaven if Ian finds out St Peter is a catholic !

Which just about says it all about The Ulster Troubles really

A war fought by fringe people who fought by proxy a wider war in Europe

A war which mainland Europe itself had abandoned centuries ago

A bit like having Confederate still fighting Unionist in Alaska as if it matters

Yet Washington DC rules Virginia with its consent anyway.
