What do they make of it all?

The Heroes that is, those brave souls from 70 years ago. Not just the D Day landers, but everyone who played a part in the war.

What must they make of Britain today?.

A series of feckless governments letting in all and sundry to this once great country. Fundamentalists spouting their muck about Islam, and the death of one of our own soldiers in our own country. I refer to Lee Rigby.

I recon they must be wondering if some of their effort was in vain.

Put it another way. What if the Nazi Scum had won?

No freedom. We'd be driving on the right side of the road. We'd all be speaking German. No democracy. The Royal Family would all be German. We'd all be saying Sieg Hell to Nick Griffin or Nigel Farage on a regular basis. Police state. No free media. We'd all be driving German cars and so on and so on. Thanks but no thanks. Great Britain today is brilliant compared to the alternative of Nazi domination.

I saw a documentary on TV a couple of years ago about this, and it explained what Britain would be like if the Germans had won the Second World War. Basically everything we've all done in the last week, and everything we plan to do in the next week, we would have been able to do. Go to work, go to the pub, go for a walk, visit friends, and so on. We would not have been slaves but we would have been monitored a lot by a very politicised Police force, army and government. We would all be speaking German, all the Jews would have been transported out of the country and exterminated, and anyone in society who was someone people listened to (like writers, historians, influential thinkers and so on) would all have been interned in jail.

The artworks and antiques of this country would have been taken and moved to Germany and everyone would have to watch what they said and thought. There would bound to have been a resistance and there would have been a fight-back, what the German administration ruling us would have called 'terrorism' no doubt, against it all so there would be lots of hostility. I doubt we would have been able to vote, at least not for anything that really counted - possibly able to vote for the odd local councillor, votes that don't affect how the nation is run, and those candidates would be puppets of the ruling administration as anyone with very different ideas would have been locked up as I've said.

It is likely the whole thing would have collapsed within a generation or so - a bit like how the Russians left Poland eventually and how democracy for all was eventually introduced in Northern Ireland - to give two examples of how oppression eventually ends in time. Also as the world became more civilised and nations started to demand that other nations behaved better to the people and peoples they controlled, democracy would have later been introduced and possibly the German colonies, we would be one, may later have been given up - if Germany suffered bad financial problems for example and were unable to sustain them any more.

For those reading this who are familiar with London, Whiteleys shopping centre, that huge stucco white building in Bayswater, west London, would have apparently become the Parliament building. Westminster would have been abandoned. I've heard that and read that a number of times in different bits of media.

A few things to consider in the above paragraphs about what it would have been like here if we had been defeated.

Not so sure...the German hierarchy had a lot of admiration for the British way of life and had ideas of sending their children to Eton, Harrow etc for the best education and compulsory bottom inspecting. What would have been more damaging was the possible American response...of carpet bombing everything until the Germans quit, thereby levelling most of the UK. Or if the US mainland was being threatened by German forces based here and in Ireland the threat of Enola Gay number 3 and possibly more being unleashed. Had Germany won UK based missiles would have been pounding the US East Coast within months and Remember America is only loyal to places they can make money and hold influence so we would be seen as a another target. Add in the fact America had plans for a limited nuclear war in Europe...

I read out your post to a relation who fought in the Second World War and his reaction was.

"We fought in that war against fuckers like this"

Mind, he is a socialist....

As I read the OP the intended discussion topic is
'how all those involved in defeating the Nazi regime feel about the UK today'
not
'how the UK might be today had the Nazi regime defeated UK / Allied forces'

My thoughts are they will feel the UK has been let down by the succession weak / short-term thinking governments who have allowed

huge numbers into the UK draining resources and creating many issues including
- inadequate funds for care for the elderly and disabled
- housing shortage
- simply feeling like a foreigner due to the number of non-english speakers \ accents
- some areas area being dominated by immigrants and even no-go areas for all in the UK in the 1940's and their descendants

the UK to have to abide by EU policies

the decline in UK manufacturing, production and general self-sufficiency creating unemployment, too many jobs that do not pay a living wage, zero hours contracts yet shops are full of imported goods including basic food and they have to deal with non-uk based call centres.

Most large companies, power Generation / supply, transport services etc now being owned / operated by foreign companies and even indirectly foreign governments e.g. Arriva / DB

Blackpool, the capital of Nazi Britain

Apparently, Hitler loved Blackpool

It wouldn't have surprised me if Britain had lost the war, that Blackpool would now be the capital of the UK. Mind you there would have been some changes. The Black and White Minstrels wouldn't have been welcome and I doubt if if Sammy Davis Jr. would have done a gig at the Opera House.

Hitler wasn't too keen on the Roma. He gassed them. Not that I want to put ideas into the mind of that man of the working class, Nasty Nigel Farage.

Max, you could have moved to Blackpool. No, Roma Big Issue sellers there, I suspect.

I imagine the Americans would have kept fighting until the war was completely over, and that would be defined as a total German defeat and all of America's allies free. The Amercians would have continued to fight for Brtiain to become free of Germany until, in this hypothetical situation of us having been defeated, the Germans were removed from Brtain. I doubt they'd have nuked a British city - possibly nuked a German city and then told "leave Britain or we'll nuke another one of your cities" type scenario.

I wouldn't want them gassed though.
