Does anybody know for certain if there ISN'T a hose pipe ban in Zommerzettt ? Wouldn't it be hilarious (and typical) if there was !

Ok, ok, ok.............I hear this quite a lot about hose-pipe bans when it's been pissing down all week. It's the fascination of many but rather easy to explain:


Reservoirs take a long time to fill up. Our reservoirs are usually filled up throughout the winter months for the spring and summer. If we have a cold but dry winter (not this winter, noted, but sometimes we do), then we can have hose-pipe bans in place during spring and summer despite it getting lots of rain during those times.

It is dry winters that cause a lot of hose-pipe bans in summer.

I don't recall many hosepipe bans in the 70s and 80s (76 possibly an exception). Could it have anything to do with the fact that in those days water was managed nationally and not by greedy companies? Just a thought...
