The point is Essex Lad when an alcoholic or a junkie starts off on the road to addiction they don't intend to be come addicts, you either have that gene in you or you don't. Once you pass a certain point in addiction there is no turning back, you are an addict/alcoholic for life. Giving up is like cutting off an arm,its easy to say stop if you haven't been there, once you are in those shoes its not so easy.

It is a choice though. If you don't want to become an alcoholic or drug addict ? don't drink or take drugs. Ninety-nine percent of "addicts" weren't forced into it. If the definition of addiction is something that someone cannot help, then how is it that so many people do give up booze (completely or for Lent), cigarettes and drugs. If, say, Russell Brand was a drug addict, how is it that he claims not to have taken anything for ten years? It's a choice ? something that you do have control over, whether you care to admit it or not.
