Apparently, there is a minimum of 70 women and girls every month seeking treatment for female genital mutilation in the UK specialist clinics.

This is probably the tip of the iceberg.

Female genital mutilation has been illegal in the UK since 1985 and yet as far as I know there has never been a prosecution for it in the UK.

A classic case of a law that is apparently never enforced.

A degree of apathy on here regarding this important subject!

Quite. There should be no heed to "being careful with community sensitivities".

This is a cruel, ignorant, damaging operation and those responsible should be prosecuted at every available opportunity.

It's a very new thing, though.

I grew up in a Muslim neighbourhood and never heard anything like this until 5 or 6 years ago as more North African Muslim immigrants moved in.

It's definitely more common in North Africa than the Middle East and my guess is it's more about culture (using religion to back up the practice).

I guess women who can't have orgasms are easier to control. And that's what it's all about: control.
