If you think atvod was bad enough

There are moves afoot in Iceland to ban internet porn. An article in today's Observer suggests that such a move, if successful (which thankfully is unlikely) would give an impetus to a similar scheme here, promoted by the usual suspects, those who pushed through the ludicrous 'extreme' porn bill and set up the fatuous organisation that is atvod. Mind you, if we did have a ban on web porn, that bunch would be out of a job, so some good would come of it. Its an ill wind, as they say.

Yes, as you point out the Icelandic MP quoted in the melonfarmers link does state that she believes that any bill would have zero chance of getting passed in Iceland, a country not noted for its repressive politics.
Secondly, in the Guardian, I note that the main proponent of the argument that this bill would be picked up in Britain by the coalition is "ant-porn campaigner and academic" Gail Dines who appears to be exercising some wish fulfilment line in this.
Like you say, this would appear unlikely to come to anything, but with this lot you cannot be 100% certain about any hare-brained scheme.

I actually read Gail Dines book thinking she made some good points about the negative effects but as I read more into it occurred to me she was spouting the same old feminist bullshit wrapped in propoganda that ive heard by similar frumpy mamas before her
She nearly had me too. I hate to use the word feminist as a bad word because Ive learned to respect you can be a feminist without coming across like a feminazi
I am really cool with people who dont like porn. Just as much as they dont want it rammed down their throat I dont want their shit rammed down mine either. When are people going to learn that you do actually have a choice to avoid the things that you dont like. Instead, people like Gail Dines are on a mission to deny you the little joys of porn on the internet.
Boooooooo!
Scary shit though. What are we to do? !nervous!

The article refers to filtering out brutal and hardcore imagery so does that mean anything with sexual activity AND important moments in history will be erased from the internet?
No more pictures of self immolation? Tianenmen square? 9/11? How far should the level of censorship go?
After all, isnt that what its ultimately about?
The main reason porn has sprung forth and burst the dam of democracy was under the whole freedom of information the internet allowed.
The deluge of porn must say something about the world we live...We're all horny bastards and bastardettes

The Internet is too big to censor. Add in the fact that at least 40% of UK net usage is porn and several large ISPs would get worried as their revenues would plummet...
