We will not be buying anymore "processed" beef products from any supermarket from now on. We will be travelling a bit further than our nearby Sainsburys and support a good English butcher.
In some ways this is probably the wake up call that is needed. The supermarkets will now be forced to verify their products, and if the arrogant greedy bastards have any sense they will now source all meat from UK farmers.

Yep, we've got a good farm shop just opened near me, (although the new HS2 is going to run straight through it) so I'm going to be sourcing all my meat direct from him. I've always preferred making my own burgers and pies, so it won't be a culture shift for me.

If Findus had produced their lasagne in the UK in their own factories with proper quality control and used UK sourced raw main ingredients they wouldn't now have a tarnished reputation that will stick for many years.

Do you assume that unless clearly stated otherwise on the labelling all Findus products are made in the UK in their own factories using predominately UK produced ingredients ?

When then told some products were made in France and not by Findus but a sub-contract company who import the meat from Romania I'm sure most would feel betrayed.

While sadly difficult to list the source of all ingredients it should be law that the origin of the main ingredients and the country of main production as well as final packaging, is clearly stated plus if by sub-contact company.
In addition 'badge name' supplier must be able to show that the product marking identifies both the sub-contract company and the specific plant.

I've just looked at a few items in my kitchen. Several state
'Produced in the UK using meat from the EU'
IMO that it not adequate, the actual country the meat was produced in must be stated.

Shoppers can then at last make informed choices.

I sincerely hope this issue is a boost for the UK food industry. I worked for a famous coffee and chocolate maker for years and the factory grounds and warehouse were spotless, never mind the production areas. Quality was God and suppliers were on a very strict contract...low standard no payment. As a result quality recalls were negligible and almost always done by us and not the customer. Bad batches of product were either buried, burned or sent for animal feed.
As an aside our local Master Butcher has seen a large increase in sales.....

I was speaking to a farmer at the weekend who said he got a much better return in the livestock market last week for his beef animals because of the horse meat scandal, but of course this will feed through to the retail price..
