The world's policeman

2 years ago Cameron led a coalition of European countries and America to intervene in Libya and prevent Gaddafi attacking Benghazi. Humanitarian reasons was the reason given. Oil was what some felt was the objective.
The result was that Gaddafi was toppled and the country fell apart as warring groups filled the power vacuum. Two years on, the American embassy in Benghazi has been burned to the ground and the American ambassador killed.
Today, British citizens in Benghazi were told to leave immediately. Apparently Benghazi has been taken over by warring Islamist groups.
Meanwhile in Algeria on the border with Libya, an oil facility was attacked and scores killed including British citizens. Some think the attack was planned from inside Libya where the government is weak.
So the British government intervention can hardly be described as a success!
Will successive British governments ever learn that they can't as Cameron himself has said "create democracy by bombing from 20,000 ft".

I think the term, "you cant stop the rot" is appropriate here.
Taking those folk out back then was only going to replace it with someone else hungry for power. Even worse if several people are vying for that same power.

Now Brits have been told to leave Somalia.
I wish we would keep our noses out of countries we don't understand! You would have thought we had leant a lesson by now.
The Russians were right. The whole of north africa has been destabilised by getting rid of Gaddaffi and the fundamentalists are taking over.
So we drive Al qaeda out of Mali and fight them in Algeria. Yet we are backing rebels that include Al qaeda to overthrough the Syrian government???????? Do we know what we are doing?
Wouldn't want to visit any muslim country these days for a holiday.

Yep and it is worth pointing out that the area around Benghazi in the time of Gaddafi had one of the highest percentages in the Muslim world of people heading off to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight the infidel.
And given the killing of the US ambassador and the "get out of Benghazi quick" advice to British citizens from the Foreign Office, after the fall of Gaddafi, shows that nothing much has changed in that respect by the end of Gaddafi.
And needless to say these foreign jaunts result in huge costs e.g. Cruise missiles at a ?1million a go etc etc.

Err DJ you are forgetting that VP Tony Blair, currently in the pay of Uncle Sam's War Mongering Lunatics sorry Depart of Offence (they don't know the meaning of defence as Mexico and Canada are covering their borders) was pretty good at offering out our brave solidiers to fight America's wars...
As for getting out of Somalia why the chuff would any sane person be there in the first place?

Have I ever denied that?
If you read my opening post
"Will successive British governments ever learn that they can't as Cameron himself has said "create democracy by bombing from 20,000 ft".
What do you think "successive" means in this context?

Camoron is A fucking liar. A few days ago we were not sending troops to Mali. Now we are to train and then what? Yet this government keeps cutting the troop numbers. I didn't think it possible for this government to be so bad!

"I didn't think it possible for this government to be so bad!"
I did and regularly posted to that effect on here in May 2010.
Message to all the Tory and Lib Dem voters on here - are you pleased at the way it has all turned out?

I quite agree with you Mr Johnson - it is a dangerous business when you
interfere with the internal affairs of another sovereign country. It can all
too easily go arse-over-tip and get messy.
Clearly, Cameron thought we could appear a) the good guys in Libya b) get
in quicker than the Yanks and win kudos c) get our hands on the lovely oil
d-z) read c) again.
Britain is not a world-class power any more and the days of Empire are over.
So is this ridiculous nonsense of a "special relationship" with the Yanks. If
we are going to interfere in other countries at all then it should be only in
emergencies that have major humanitarian reasons affecting our national
interests - otherwise stay out. A caveat might be also old British colonies
where honour dictates some responsibilty.
Cameron is, in my opinion, perhaps less of a hypocrite than Blair, but far far
worse as a Prime Minister.

In the news today, we are now sending troops to support the Algerian government. Good job we are not introducing substantial cuts to troop numbers. Err, we are.
