I lay the odds sometimes on betfair and occasionly you clean up but you can also get hammered, sign up for the free bets Here and then lay the bet on the exchanges, if the bet loses you pocket the exchange money and if it wins and you have to pay out you are covered by the free bet..

Betting is only any good when you can afford to lose piffling sums. Like a bet on the Grand National or a day out at Haydock with some mates where a little bet gives you a gee gee to cheer and shout for.
Betting serious money for the vast majority of punters is like hitting yourself over the head with a house brick. I had a holiday job in a bookies in Blackpool. Like all bookies we had our regulars - every day, regular as clockwork. Bit of a win and you never heard the last of it. No mention from most of them about the endless losses I knew they were making. I don't think we had a single punter who actually made money over say a month.
I always remember a jumps race about three miles which had just started when a little middle aged lady walked in with her tweed overcoat and handbag. I made as if I could take the bet because a 3 mile race that had just started was typically no probs. She opened her handbag and there was the biggest wad of ?20s I had ever seen. She wanted to put ?2K on a horse that was 20-1. I quickly made my excuses and turned the bet away and got a pasting from the punters.
Anyway, she made not an iota of complaint, simply turned round and walked out. The horse won at 20-1. Now this is another thing that your average punter has to put up with. Your typical prize money is pitiful for most races so there is a whole lot of extra-curricular activity going on which Joe Public knows nowt about.
Mugs' game.

Lost thousands on horses and dogs over the years. Thank fuck for betfair which actually gives punters the chance to LAY horses etc. The punter has never had it so good since the birth of the betting exchanges.

Simple maths...how many paying in tills and how many paying out in a shop? 5-1 in my local Corall....says it all.
