A theatre critic writes.

Went on a rare foray into the West End with she who must be obeyed the other night to see 'The 39 Steps' at the Criterion in Piccadilly. Its a thoroughly spiffing production that takes a rather comic turn on the well-loved Hitchcock version, but also referencing other movies by the master as well. It even includes a cleverly introduced 'appearance' by Hitch himself. The cast of 4 work their socks off playing over 100 parts between them, sometimes with one actor portraying two characters at once. Ingenious use is made of props and furniture to convey anything from the train to Scotland to house interiors (and the room next door by the simple act of turning a door on wheels round). The woman playing the female roles is a cracker and I have to say I wouldn't mind being handcuffed to her anytime. All credit to the two 'Men' who between them account for every male part (except Hannay), and some female ones as well. A great evening, albeit a bit short, with skilful playing, good timing, some nice jokes, and fun spotting the references to the films, not in any way spoilt by my other half getting locked in the empty theatre until the early hours, (dont ask).
