School Sports

As the country enjoys the unprecedented success of TeamGB, our esteemed political leader, David Cameron gives us the benefit of his thinking on the topic of school sports. He announced that there needs to be a change in culture towards competitive sports in schools and that teachers aren't doing enough to help kids get into sport.

What Cameron didn't mention, of course was:

1. In autumn 2010 Michael Gove cut the entire ?162 million budget for schools support co-ordinators who were tasked to increase competitive sports betwen schools and organise and run that competitive infrastructure. This was done despite half a million teachers, parents, children and Olympians signing a petition condemning this action. The school support co-ordinatos scheme had been brought in by Labour

2. The coalition got rid of the Labour insistence that each school organised 2 hours sport a week for pupils, describing it as a "meaningless, tickbox exercise.

3. The coalition got rid of free swimming lessons for kids under 16 introduced by Labour.

4. Gove has carried on the retrograde step that we also saw under Labour allowing the selling off of school playing fields.

What a useless, dishonest slimebag Cameron is. Needless to say Boris Johnson ever keen to stick the knife into Cameron, announced that, despite accusing Labour of having a meaningless, unenforceable 2hrs per week sport commitment in the past, he is now miraculously in favour of "2 hrs per day of sport in schools".

Meanwhile, yet more success with the economy, where, despite the pound being heavily devalued over the last 5 or 6 years, the worst trade deficit figures since 1997 were announced. Not only were the figures for the EU bad, but there was also a huge drop in exports to non-EU oountries.

Double dip recession, 0% growth predicted for this year, biggest trade deficit since 97, who voted for these tossers?

Johnson declares:

I wonder what state we'd be in if your New Labour had won the last election? Well, we'd probably well on our way to be living in a police state enforced by humourless people like yourself and of course we'd almost certainly be bankrupt, because Labour couldn't have curbed their reckless squandering.

I don't support either your lot or the Tories, but don't start suggesting your bunch of incompetent clowns could have done any better than this lot of incompetent clowns!

"Tory clowns VS New Labour clowns- Who will fuck things up the most? Roll up! Roll up! Put you money down on the gamble of the century.....a gamble where NOBODY wins apart from the fat cats and bankers, WHO ALWAYS WIN!"!laugh!!laugh!!laugh!

And he's off. Could we instead discuss the heinous non competitive (is that possible?) sports days brought in under Nu Labor? Winning bad, losing good.
Problem is not with the government or the schools but the lazy bastard parents who can't be arsed to take an interest in their kids' wellbeing and stuff them down in front of a playstation instead of a game of footy down the park......

Jimslip

Nowt going on in your post other than the "Jimslip what a loveable wag!" bollocks, so best ignored.

Argie

"Could we instead discuss the heinous non competitive (is that possible?) sports days brought in under Nu Labor? Winning bad, losing good".

Which part of the following don't you understand "In autumn 2010 Michael Gove cut the entire ?162 million budget for schools support co-ordinators who were tasked to increase competitive sports betwen schools and organise and run that competitive infrastructure. This was done despite half a million teachers, parents, children and Olympians signing a petition condemning this action. The school support co-ordinators scheme had been brought in by Labour"

Of course, Thatcher and Major did a fantastic job for competitive sport throughout society. Atlanta 1996 after 17 years of Tory government, 1 gold medal. Labour in power 1997-2010 - Beijing in 2008 19 gold medals. London 25 gold medals and counting. Now Argie, you dont have to answer immediately, but who seems to be better at supporting competitive sport both in schools and subsequently amongst elite athletes?

Lizard

"Cameron might be hamstrung by his coalition partners"

So it was the Lib Dems that insisted on cutting the Schools Sports Partnership tasked with improving the level of schools sports was it? And presumably it was the Lib Dems that insisted that the need to have 2 hours sport per week for schoolkids should be dispensed with?

", but thank fuck we don't have that dour scottish mong and his social climbing twittering wife to contend with anymore."

A well argued post if you don't mind me saying. Pulls my argument to pieces that's for sure!!

Enjoy the sunshine boys, but avoid sunstroke, if you can!

You also forgot to mention that Gove has approved 99% of applications to turn school playing fields into land for housing projects, something which the Tories said would NEVER be allowed to happen in their manifesto!

Your little dig at John Major is a wee bit flawed.

He was responsible for introducing lottery funding to sport, which most people recognize as the main reason for GB's domination in certain sports, cycling to name but one.

To a certain extent I would agree i.e. John Major did set up the National Lottery and he was keen on sport. However the Lottery wasn't even set up til late 1994 so had had minimal impact by the time he left office in May '97

THis was reflected in the piss poor results in the '96 Olympics.

So hats off to him for setting up the National Lottery, but the key factors in our current success are the funding that Labour put into not only elite sports but also school sports.
