Who says crime doesn't pay?
Jerry del Missier, the former Barclays Bank executive at the centre of the interest-rate rigging scandal that cost the lender ?290m, has walked away with a pay-off of almost ?9m.
When are these despicable fraudsters going to be arrested and locked up? If they really have done nothing that contravenes the law, then the law is an ass. These Banksters are making a mockery of our society.

Investment banking seems to operate in an alternative universe to the rest of us.
I worked in the City in the 80's during the time that Thatcher deregulated the banks. I was gobsmacked at what went on in the trading rooms. There were people working as traders who I got to know, who I would have thought would have been better suited to fruit and veg trading. In fact that is where a number of them had come from - market trading. Not that I have anything against market traders in particular.
They weren't particularly bright but they were very quick witted. What seemed to characterise them was that they were amoral, ruthless and didn't really give a toss for their customers. They were making what seemed to me to be huge amounts of money. If the customer sold shares, they made money. If the customer bought shares, they made money.
WHat has obviously happened is that this ruthless, amoral gambling with other people's money has largely gone on uncontrolled and unabated for 30 years and hey presto, we are now living in the natural conclusion of this trend, a monumental mess with on the one hand, investment bankers getting huge bonuses and payoffs and on the other, disabled people getting cuts in their benefits to pay for the bailout of the investment banking sector.
Unbelievable.

The upper management in all concerns in the country now have a "Fat cat" mindset. It doesn't matter if they are running an NHS trust or a bank. If they fail they get a bonus and if they succeed they get a bonus. They are completely amoral and out of touch with the rest of society.
I remember seeing a TV programme where it explained how fat cats actually write their own job descriptions for other fat cats to "keep it in the family".That is why neither you or I could ever get a fat cat job, because we are NOT in the loop. Interestingly, "Competence" is not a particularly valued attribute,it is knowing how to play the game which is more important.
It will require a revolution of values to change anything, but as you rightly point out just a few of these crooks hauled off in handcuffs in front of TV cameras would certainly be a good start.

"It will require a revolution of values to change anything,"
Bit hypocritical for someone like you to talk about a revolution of values, James, surely? Someone who professes to be against infringements of civil liberties, yet is all in favour of network blocking because:
1. It will get rid of "bandwidth timewasters" accessing free porn (O/T forumites you know who you are).
2. It will get rid of small websites recently started (forumites you know who you are).
3. It will make extra dosh for the proud owner of the extremely excellent, high quality, tremendous value site named www.jimslip.com.
Was it Frank Thring who said the only thing Jim Slip is really interested in is his website?
Never a truer word was spoken, eh Jim?
!wink!
