R.I.P. to a brave man aged 94 years - Gunnar Sonsteby was the WWII
Special Operations Executive`s agent "24", their most important saboteur
in Scandinavia and head of Oslo operations. He was thus the Gestapo`s
most wanted man, operating under 50 different aliases....His feats included
blowing up 40 Nazi planes on one night, destroying the Norwegian forced
labour office so Norwegians could not be sent to the Eastern Front and
wrecking the rail system after D Day so effectively that the Germans could
not move vital troops and supplies southwards. In 1944 he masterminded
the "execution" of the hated head of the Norwegian-German police.
After the war Gunnar, the highest decorated hero in his country`s history,
refused to pick up a gun again. He said simply, "Why did I do it all ?
Because seeing germans in uniform marching all over my country made me
bloody angry !"
