Ken missed a trick

Post by Sam Slater »

Why has Ken not jumped at such an opportunity?

Probably too busy answering questions about his tax affairs.

Personally I find the hysteria over his setting up of a limited company to deal with his income from writing books, articles etc ludicrous. Sole trader or limited company status is something that is expected by HMRC for those operating as self-employed so I can't see how people view it as "tax avoidance".

It's something that millions of people - electricians, builders, consultants do in this country in a situation where increasingly a well paid, full time job as an employee is becoming a thing of the past for Joe Public.

It is because he is such an odious little creep. That is why there has been such a furore about him and his tax affairs.
I wish I had been able to be a sole trader instead of locking myself into the PAYE system.

"I wish I had been able to be a sole trader instead of locking myself into the PAYE system."

You could have. All you needed to do was become self employed. You chose a career where this may not have been possible, but that was the choice that you made.

However by becoming self employed, you can kiss goodbye to sick pay, any kind of job security whatever, no employer contributions into your pension, no holiday pay, no indication of whether you will have enough money at the end of the month after next to pay the bills, endless hassle from the Job Centre if you need help during a rough patch, the joys of self employed tax returns and HMRC's desire to screw the little people etc, etc, etc, etc.

The grass is always greener, Rodders.

It was a wish.
I chose a career that was in the PAYE system so that's my fault.
Don't fucking patronise me I know what the benefits are. I am drawing them.

If so, no point wishing you had been a sole trader then eh? Otherwise you would have done something about it.

Instead yoiu prefered to enjoy the public sector benefits of what Call Me Dave would call a gold plated pension.

Understandable, I guess.

I aint in the public sector, I am in the private sector.
I work hard, still, at 67 and will do so until I am 70.
So don't you start taking me for granted. I enjoy a good job with a good company with good benefits, and it is a combination of my companies choice and mine to continue until I am 70. Pensions yes, but not the ones that the civil service or the emergency services enjoy.
Saying "I wish" is a term that everyone at some time or other says just as a manner of speech in reply to a revalation. Even you.
I am glad that I didn't go the way my brothers did as sole traders and my son in law at present. So quit going on about what being a sole trader is about. I know what it is about.

Look Rodders,

1. When someone says "I really fancy women with thin waists and big tits" most people do not assume that what they really mean is "I fancy women who are fat and have no tits".

2. Similarly when I point out that I see nothing wrong with Ken Livingstone setting himself up as a self-employed person and you reply to my post slagging him off and saying "I wish I had been able to be a sole trader instead of locking myself into the PAYE system", I don't automatically assume that what you really mean is "I am glad that I didn't go the way my brothers did as sole traders "

3. "I aint in the public sector, I am in the private sector." As you have frequently pointed out you spent quite a bit of time in the armed forces and have received an armed forces pension for a number of years. Now unless, Call me Dave has privatised the armed forces and sold them to Kentucky Fried CHicken without telling anyone, you obviously spent a lot of time in the public sector and get a public sector pension.

4. I realise that you seem to hate owning up to having worked in the public sector and getting a public sector pension. Why is that? Is it something to do with the fact that you have expressed a lot of support for Nigel Farage and UKIP in the past and that lot are very much against the size of the public sector and the "gold plated pensions" that they believe public sector workers like you get?
