It does make you wonder with our greed to extract every last ounce of energy from the earth as to what sort of world we will be leaving to future generations, some recent articles..

I raised this issue awhile back with regard to fracking being linked to two minor earthquakes in the Blackpool area. Caused ?2million worth of improvements! Sorry, an old joke, I know.

A moratorium was placed on fracking in the area subject to a decision as to whether the companies would be allowed to start again. As far as I know it hasnt been announced yet as to whether they will be allowed to proceed.

Okay dokey. We have loads of water here. I would point out that any additional water sent doon south should have a prohibitive price attached.

We want a rebalancing of the economy between North and South thank you.

Maybe the proposed HS2 project should make sure that the new track is on a slight slope, southwards.

To allow our spare water, from the luxuriant, lush, green Norrrrff, to trickle down to the scorched, barren, dusty Saaaaff.

"Affluent south? Ha! Remember the London riots last summer? They were looting for trainers, TVs and toilet paper. Thats affluence???"

Did I say everybody is affluent in the South? No. Obviously there are people who are badly off throughout the country.

I am generalising. And what is beyond question is that the south east is the powerhouse of the British economy where unemployment rates are lower and average household income much higher than in the North.

The reason for this is pretty understandable.

1. In the nineteenth century it was the other way round where the north was the centre of the industrial revolution in terms of coal mining, steel, textiles, ship building etc etc. The 20th century saw the decline of those industries in the north. Under Thatcher's government hundreds of thousands of jobs were lost in well paid, unionised industries.
2. If you travel through the north, people will tell you that nothing much has replaced those jobs other than minimum wage, zero contract hours jobs in the service sector.
3. During the Labour government, many areas in the north saw big increases in public sector jobs but now the Tories are in power, once again hundreds of thousands of people are losing their jobs in this area too.
4. In the south as exports to euroland are the mainstay of the UK economy, together with the financial sector etc, the gap between north and south has increasingly widened.

"They were looting for trainers, TVs and toilet paper. Thats affluence???"

Remind me, I didn't see any barefooted people looting trainers. Looking at the sort of shops that were looted what went on was an outbreak of unbrindled consumerism in which people went for stuff like expensive trainers, brands that they couldnt normally afford in shops like Armani, expensive hifi gear in Bang and Olufsen and huge flat screen teles etc.

As for those shops that did not get looted, it was those which are not part of ceaseless, aspirational ad campaigning e.g. bookshops.
