You could ask the same question about Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, One Direction, and all the other Facebook and Twitter endorsed pop fluff thats cluttering up the charts at the moment. My take on the Adele phenomenom, 'big-boned', down to earth, working class girl sings overwrought ballads about how her man "gone done her wrong" that checkout girls and beauty parlour assistants up and down the country can identify with. Can't stand her ear splitting, rasping voice, at my local cafe in Budapest they put her records on all the time, maybe it's to clear people out to make more space!

I think she has a good voice.
She writes her own songs and can sing live. I wouldn't buy her music but I can see she is very talented.

Not sure if astute marketing had that much to do with it.
She won a Brit Awards Critics Choice award in 2008. Doubt if "astute marketing" influences critics choices that much.
Her first album, 19 died the death in the US until she hit lucky and managed to get a spot on Saturday Night Live in the same show as Sarah Palin, a presidential campaign possibility at the time, did a stint. The next day she was top of the Itunes chart.
Marketing always has a part to play, but I think Adele has got there through sheer talent with the usual requirement of having a slice of luck, despite throwing wobblers like cancelling US tours and getting ill so she had to stop all live performances etc etc.
I don't think she has made it so big in the States and worldwide because loads of people have thought "Oh she looks overweight compared to Gaga and I dont understand her accent, let's buy her album etc etc."
