I didn't have much time for Galloway when he was an MP, but since he savaged the US senate Committee, or whichever it was, I nearly always listen to him. He does his homework I will say that for him, and on this issue he is spot on. The bloke he was talking to is an ignoramus.

This clip shows all that is worst about phone ins. On the one hand you have Galloway who, whatever people think of him is no thicko, talking to a bloke who comes across as a complete waste of airspace.

I suspect that there is a part of Alex Salmond and the SNP that is shitting themselves at the thought of full independence. Some of the things that Salmond comes out with suggest that he has clearly not thought things through. For example, he argues that there is nothing to stop an independent Scotland keeping sterling as it's currency and seems to be touting this as an option.

Really Alex? So how is that going to work for a newly independent Scotland where the decisions on interest rates are made in London. If Scotland kept sterling they would be in a euro-style situation with only two countries, what was left of the UK and Scotland in which the Scottish economy was very, very small compared to the other country.

A fully independent Scotland would have two options for currency:

The euro. Come on Alex, you had Ireland as your model for how an independent Scotland would manage a couple of years ago, give it a go!

Their own currency. Once again, Alex can show how Scotland can turn into one of his other independence models, Iceland!

What it cannot do sensibly is stay with sterling as a fully independent nation.

Cheers
D

Alex Almond is a pompus self centred politician who is thinking on his on infamy.....

The pound issue - does he really think england will allow us to keep the pound if we break away - Like fantasy pure fantasy indeed. The pound is English - if we break away we can keep the pound but it would be a scottish pound totally seperate from the english pound.

A breakaway would decimate scotland - after thinking it would be a great idea and then doing a little research on it quickly realised that it would be national suicide. We simply dont have enough of an economy to maintain anywhere a decent lifestyle without being part of the UK.

How would we maintain a prsence on the global market ? How would we maintain our health service and every other part of system without the back up of the UK ?

An absolutely terrible thing to do would be to seperate - The likes of Alex is only interested in him self and of making a name for him self - he would do that alright he would be the guy who brought about the seperation of scotland from england and the eventual collapse of the scottish economy.

How would we defend ourselves what about army airforce and navy ? What about some common sense ? stop milking the patriotic feelings and trying to win us over with ill thought out policy - Go away Alex and bring to the table a proper plan that fully details this and demonstrates how you would make it work - facts figures and the like if you cant do that then go to the corner sit down and shut up.

Interesting comments there. I personally think that Scotland will be a lot worse off if it broke away. Even when they use the example of North Sea oil it is worth remembering that will run out at some point, and what will the Scots do then? I think some people in Scotland will be keen to break away because of a romantic view about how nice it would be to be independant. They are not looking at the facts and figures.

If Salmond loses, it will be the end of his political career. I see Nicola Sturgeon as a kind of William Hague/Iain Duncan Smith type figure - as a kind of pay-off they will give her a job in some senior capacity later on within the political administarion - but Alex Salmond will be finished. He will be 'retired', give some 'Baron' type title, then go off and become a multi-millionaire trading off the contacts he made whilst in politics. He will continue to pop up on TV shows and will still be well known.
