Captain first, then women and children!

I'm sorry to say this and I'm sure I'll be savaged for it, but I simply cannot believe that a British captain of such a liner would abandon his ship long before his passengers! It just wouldn't be.........British?

Yep, a British captain would have a beard, and a bit of decorum about him. And gone down with his ship.
That guy looks like he'd be worried about getting his hair gel wet.

I just noticed this bit in the article!
"A French couple on the ship, Ophelie Gondelle and David Du Pays, of Marseille, said they saw the captain in a lifeboat, covered by a blanket, before all the passengers escaped. "The commander left before and was on the dock before everyone was off," said Ms Gondelle, 28."
Can you imagine this chap, pushing his way past women and children and then "Hiding inder a blanket".............I think not!

I wonder what the insurance premium is on a ship like that?

A school friend of mine holds a British Merchant Marine Masters Certificate and has said to me in the past that seeing everyone off was part of the job and was accepted as such. The responsibility was what he was paid for.
Jim is correct. Though I wouldn't claim that the stiff upper lip is entirely a British thing. There are others equally dedicated to their job and responsibility. The American Navy has a habit of their Captains going down with the ship. Saves them facing a Courts Martial some have said, but I wouldn't be so nasty to our American cousins.

Yes I agree about the Americans and probably the Aussies too! Here's another yellow belly that left his passengers to drown like rats!

That just shows the quality of bloke we are dealing with these days
He couldve died a heros death once instead he has to die a thousand shameful ones with all the dirty looks he'll get for being a lilly livered captain and he can bank on never working in the shipping or cruise business again
Who reckons he'll get any gainful employment after this in any job?

Latest news is the captain of the Costa Concordia was fleeing the stricken vessel so that he could, "Cordordinate the rescue effort from the shore!" !laugh!
