Slade's best ever song...

Slade are one of the best British bands of all time in my opinion. They over-played their hand with that Christmas song, and most people associate them with that above all else, but they also released some truly superb songs throughout their career. I was a bit too young to be into them during their heyday but have listened to their back catalogue since. This song is pure brilliance!

Slade couldn't hold a candle to the Faces in my book.

Hey

Great band? Yes. One of the greatest British Bands ever? Matter of opinion. But much like The Sweet, now considered a bit of a joke band, where as both bands put out some great rock tunes.

As for their best record...again a matter of opinion but I would have to go for these two

However. My favourite Sweet record is PURE Novelty and not one of their finest.

All of these records come from at least five years before I was born and are from a genre that was slated in my 'post punk' childhood. So that must be some testament to their quality and lasting appeal.

As for that fucking Christmas record....don't get me started!!

Cheers

BB

P.S

Number 6 is a massive cunt and the best I can wish him for Christmas is an early death

How Does It Feel and Far Far Away are two of my favourite ever songs. Great band. Booked them in 1980 at UEA and we could have sold each of the 1500 tickets 5 or 6 times over. Overall possibly not as good as The Faces, but still up there as a great British band and a great live act!

Lots of interesting comments there. I saw a documentary about them, which all four members were interviewed especially for, on BBC1 about 10 years ago. Some of the clips of them live back the 1970s were very impressive, their Earls Court gig in (I think) 1974 would have been amazing to have been at. It was just a shame that people so associated them with that Christmas song above all else, I imagine they would've had to have played that live at every gig they did after it became popular, and it would have been weird seeing Slade playing in June, and playing a Christmas song.

Jim Lea, the bass player, said on that documentary that they played a heavy metal festival back in the mid-1970s (I can't remember which one). He said something like: "there we were, middle of summer, a heavy metal concert, and people were yelling "Merry Christmas" at us. It was crazy". I suspect they regretted just how synonymous that Christmas song and they became, but it is hardly the fault of an artist if something becomes as huge as it does - and as Noddy Holder said not so long ago "that song is my pension plan".

I think its great how he appears to have embraced it, rather than shy away from the popularity of it as many artists try to do when they make a big hit
